Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Ramon Vega has announced that he plans to run for the Fifa presidency in next year’s election, setting up a potential challenge to incumbent Gianni Infantino.

The 55-year-old former Switzerland international is the first candidate to publicly confirm his intention to contest the position in an election that could attract increased attention following recent divisions within football’s governing structure.

Former Switzerland Defender Turns to Fifa Politics

Vega enjoyed a playing career that included spells with Tottenham Hotspur, Celtic and Watford before retiring from professional football in 2004.

Since leaving the game, he has worked in finance and has remained involved in football-related discussions. His latest announcement represents another attempt to seek the organisation’s top position after previous interest in the role.

Vega previously considered standing for the Fifa presidency in 2015 following the suspension of former president Sepp Blatter.

Previous Attempt to Challenge Infantino

Vega also announced in 2019 that he intended to challenge Infantino for the presidency. However, he was unable to secure the required support to appear on the ballot.

Candidates were required to obtain backing from at least five of Fifa’s 211 member associations, a threshold Vega did not reach at the time.

His latest declaration means he will again seek an opportunity to compete for football’s most influential administrative position.

Vega Calls for Reform at Fifa

In announcing his candidacy, Vega said his objective would be to address divisions within international football and introduce changes to Fifa’s governance.

He said he wanted to reunite the global football community, strengthen the organisation’s credibility and modernise its structures for the current era.

Vega also argued that football’s governing institutions should place greater emphasis on the interests of players, coaches, referees, supporters, clubs, leagues, associations and communities.

Concerns Over Football’s Governance

Vega’s announcement comes amid significant criticism of Fifa’s current leadership.

He argued that disputes within football administration have contributed to divisions across the sport and said governance problems had affected confidence in the organisation.

According to Vega, disagreements between football officials should not come at the expense of those directly involved in the game.

Infantino Maintains His Position

Infantino has faced calls to leave his position following controversy surrounding a plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors.

The proposal generated opposition in parts of the football community, while Uefa, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation have reportedly called for Infantino to step down.

Despite the pressure, Infantino said last month that he remained fully committed to continuing as Fifa president.

Vega Says Football Must Come Before Politics

Vega’s campaign message centres on the argument that football should remain the priority rather than administrative disputes.

He said the sport belongs collectively to everyone involved in it, from grassroots participants and supporters to professional players and national teams.

The former defender also stressed that football’s worldwide following should be reflected in the way the sport is governed.

Call for Fundamental Change

Vega described the current situation at Fifa in stark terms, saying the organisation was in an emergency situation and could no longer afford to delay major changes.

He called for a new direction, greater stability and reforms that would go beyond limited or cosmetic adjustments.

His proposed agenda includes changes aimed at restoring confidence in Fifa and strengthening its governance.

Fifa Presidency Race Takes Shape

Vega’s announcement adds another potential dimension to the next Fifa presidential election, although his candidacy will ultimately depend on meeting the formal requirements for inclusion on the ballot.

His previous attempt ended before he could secure the necessary nominations, making the support he can attract from Fifa’s member associations a key factor once the election process formally develops.

For now, Vega has positioned his campaign around governance reform, unity and restoring trust across the international football community.
