Proteas thrash New Zealand by 190 runs
The Proteas took a giant leap towards the Cricket World Cup semi-finals with a 190-run thrashing of New Zealand in Pune on November 1, 2023.
New Zealand won the toss and put the Proteas in to bat, but after a promising start, the wheels came off for the Black Caps.
Quinton de Kock scored another World Cup century, becoming the first man to go past 500 runs in the tournament. He shared a 200-run second wicket stand with Rassie van der Dussen, who top-scored with 133 off just 118 balls.
David Miller gave the Proteas a big finish with a belligerent 53 that helped lift South Africa to 357 for 4 in their 50 overs.
New Zealand suffered injuries in the field to both Matt Henry and Jimmy Neesham, which didn’t help their cause.
In the chase, early wickets from Marco Jansen left New Zealand under pressure and Keshav Maharaj destroyed the middle order.
New Zealand ended up sending out a lame Henry as the last batter, with Glenn Phillips whacking a few boundaries, but eventually holing out after striking 60.
RVDD strikes it big
Van der Dussen’s 133 earned him the Player of The Match award.
The Proteas’ victory was a record-breaking one, as they became the first team to score 350+ runs in an ODI against New Zealand in India.
The win also takes the Proteas to the top of the Cricket World Cup table, with just two matches remaining in the group stage.
