President Bola Tinubu’s Bid to Block Release of University Records in US Court

President Bola Tinubu has taken legal action to prevent a United States Federal Court from disclosing his university academic records to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

This move comes in response to Atiku’s request to the States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois on August 2, urging them to issue a subpoena to Chicago State University for the release of Tinubu’s educational records.

Atiku’s reasoning for this demand stems from long-standing controversies regarding President Tinubu’s educational background.

Atiku’s Subpoena and Legal Challenge

In his subpoena submission, Atiku Abubakar informed the court that he was seeking these documents as part of the discovery process to reinforce his legal challenge against the declaration of Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s president.

Atiku had previously initiated legal proceedings in a county court in Chicago, Illinois.

However, he withdrew this initial case to replace it with a more comprehensive federal complaint.

Consequently, a county judge struck off the earlier case and paved the way for Atiku’s federal complaint against Tinubu.

Tinubu’s Response and Allegations

On the other side, President Tinubu has made a request to be included as an interested party in the ongoing lawsuit.

He alleges that Chicago State University may not adequately safeguard his interests as the holder of the sought-after records.

This request, submitted by his Chicago-based attorney Christopher Carmichael on August 3, argues that Tinubu’s records should not be disclosed under the protection of a 1974 privacy law for American students.

Legal Proceedings and Future Outlook

The case now rests with a federal judge, and both parties are anticipating an expedited hearing and resolution.

Atiku’s assertion that a verdict from the Nigerian election petitions tribunal is expected by September 21, 2023, adds urgency to the proceedings.

This timeline underscores the significance of the ongoing legal battle in determining the legitimacy of Bola Tinubu’s presidency based on his academic records.
