On Saturday, February 22, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded in the bustling market of Mulhouse, France, where a 69-year-old Portuguese man, Lino Sousa Loureiro, lost his life while trying to defend the police.

The assailant, identified as Brahim Abdessemed, had been on a violent rampage and Lino’s brave attempt to intervene ended fatally.

A Heroic Act that Cost a Life

Lino Sousa Loureiro, a longtime resident of Mulhouse, was reportedly shopping at the covered Canal market square when the attack began.

At approximately 3:40 p.m., Abdessemed, armed with a knife, had just severely injured two parking attendants. In a selfless act of courage, Lino tried to stop the assailant as he attempted to flee the scene.

Unfortunately, Lino was stabbed in the chest during the intervention.

Despite being rushed to the hospital, he tragically passed away in the emergency vehicle.

Condolences from Friends and Politicians

The heartbreaking news of Lino’s death spread quickly, with condolences pouring in from various sources.

A Portuguese politician, Joao Soarez, took to social media to share the news of Lino’s passing.

According to Soarez, Lino had lived in Mulhouse, just 500 meters from the scene of the attack.

“Condolences to the family and friends of Lino Sousa Loureiro,” wrote Soarez, accompanied by a photo of the deceased.

A Life Remembered and Honored by the Community

Lino Sousa Loureiro, originally from Ermesinde, a town located northeast of Porto, emigrated to France in 1992. He was married and a father to one child.

The cultural and folk group of the Portuguese community in Mulhouse expressed their sorrow and paid tribute to Lino’s brave actions.

“We are in mourning after the tragic attack in Mulhouse, which cost the life of one of our own, a courageous Portuguese compatriot, who sacrificed his life to protect others,” they wrote on Facebook.

Lino’s act of bravery will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him, and his selflessness in the face of danger is a reminder of the heroism that can emerge even in the most harrowing circumstances.
