Parties from across the political spectrum have joined the call for the intensification of the fight against gender-based violence in the wake of the brutal killing of Hillary Gardee outside Mbombela in Mpumalanga.

She was the daughter of former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Secretary-General Goodrich Gardee. Her burial service was held in Mbombela on Saturday.

In a statement, the African National Congress’s (ANC) Sub-Committee Chairperson for Social Transformation Lindiwe Sisulu says violations of human rights including the right to life in South Africa must end immediately.

The Congress of the People (COPE) has held a moment of silence for 28 year-old Gardee at its two day Women and Youth Summit on Gauteng’s East Rand.

COPE Deputy President Willie Madisha says, “We shall never agree we can never agree as the Congress of the People that this kind of thing must just go on and on and on we know that the young girls, women are being killed on a daily basis. For instance you see this young woman in Mpumalanga who was killed and the people as we speak now are gathered there crying now, that must not happen and therefore as as the young people and the women must talk about that and emerge with a solution.”
