ROBBER WHO GOT INTO SHOOTOUT WITH POLICE SENTENCED

South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Captain Xoli Mbele said the accused and two accomplices robbed a house in Kibler Park, Johannesburg on the night of 17 October 2019.

“The owner of the house returned from work and was confronted by three suspects when he parked his vehicle.

“The accused tied him and his family before they ransacked the house. Various items were taken which include televisions, laptops, cellphones, jewellery and a vehicle,” said Mbele.

As the suspects fled the scene, the vehicle’s Tracker signal activated and police were alerted. The cops attempted to intercept the car on the Golden Highway.

The suspects shot at the police who returned fire until the vehicle was eventually boxed in. Mapeyi’s accomplices jumped out and ran away – evading arrest. The accused, however, was trapped in the car as he had sustained a gunshot wound.

Most of the stolen goods were recovered at the scene along with a firearm. Mapeyi has been in custody since his arrest.

He was sentenced for robbery with aggravating circumstances and was declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“The good conviction is a result of quality investigation by Detective Sergeant Mbali Mvelase of SAPS Johannesburg Central Trio team,” said the police spokesperson
