Philosophy Students NAU Awka Celebrate 2021 Cultural Fiesta

The rich cultural heritage of Ndigbo was on display recently, as students of Philosophy Department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, celebrated their 2021 cultural fiesta.

Correspondent, Kenechukwu Chukwudi reports that atmosphere at the venue of the event was festive, as students, adorned in their cultural attire, all came in numbers to celebrate the day, showing their unique Igbo dancing steps.

In his remark at the event, the Head of the Department, Professor Mmaduabuchi Duko noted that Igbo culture is unique and stressed that it is important to be revived and sustained, especially now that modernism and neo-colonialism seem to relegate the Igbo culture to the background.

He also recommended that the deep philosophical meaning of Igbo proverbs be taught to students to enable them understand life better.

A lecturer in the Department, Sir Augustine Ike explained that Igbo culture is rich, must be preserved and taught to every student in the university.

The Igwe of the Department, Mr. Chinedu Nwaokwu, and Lolo, Miss Mmesoma Uzoezie expressed delight over the event which they said was organized to preserve and uplift the culture of Ndigbo, advising fellow students to organize themselves and help promote Igbo culture and traditions.

The Igwe of the University, Mr  Chijioke Lebechi emphasized the need to transmit Igbo culture to the upcoming generation, adding that Igbo culture will keep growing in dynamics.

The event featured Izaga masquerade, cultural dances and displays as well as installation rite of a new traditional Head for the Department.
