Phil Foden expresses frustration over England role as Manchester City star reflects on Euros struggles and missed potential

Phil Foden has never been one to stir controversy, but his latest comments suggest a level of frustration with how things played out for England at the Euros.

The 24-year-old Manchester City star reflected on his time with the national team, hinting that former manager Gareth Southgate may not have used him to his full potential.

Foden Frustrated with England Role at the Euros

During the tournament, Foden was primarily deployed on the left wing—a position he believes limited his ability to impact the game.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he admitted feeling disappointed with his performances, not because of a lack of effort, but because of the tactical setup.

“I feel frustrated I didn’t get out what I wanted to,” Foden said.

“The position I was put in on the left was very difficult to influence the game.

Coming off last season—being the best player in the Premier League and playing centre midfield—I do feel the position was quite difficult to get used to.”

Despite being a versatile player capable of adapting to multiple roles, Foden suggested that England never truly found their rhythm at the tournament.

“I’m someone who can play multiple positions, and I had to try to deal with it the best I could.

But I don’t feel like England ever got going or performed to our potential.”

Manchester City’s Unusual Season

Shifting focus to club football, Foden also addressed Manchester City’s inconsistent form this season.

Under Pep Guardiola, City have set incredibly high standards, but they currently find themselves in fourth place in the Premier League—a rare sight for a team accustomed to dominating.

“Even though it’s been a challenging season, we’ve still got things to look forward to,” he said.

“Because we’re having a bit of a blip, we can’t lose belief.

I still believe we can do good things and come back from this.

I want to try to show I’m a leader by turning up in big moments and helping the team when I can.”

Priorities for the Season Ahead

Foden remains optimistic about City’s chances, despite their struggles.

He acknowledged the importance of securing a top-four finish while keeping an eye on silverware.

“We need to look at finishing at least top four in the Premier League—aiming to win the Champions League and the FA Cup as well.”

Dealing with Mental and Physical Fatigue

Beyond tactics and team performances, Foden also opened up about his personal struggles at the start of the 2024-2025 season.

After playing a crucial role in City’s treble-winning campaign, he admitted returning to action wasn’t as easy as usual.

“For me, football is played with the brain, and when the brain is mentally fatigued, you’re not going to see a player for who he is,” he explained.

“I’m normally itching to get back, but when I came back, my body and my mental state were low.

“I’ve been playing since the age of five, pushing myself every day to be the best I can.

When you add up all the games and all the traveling, it is a lot for the body.”

That mental and physical exhaustion led to a slow start, with minor injuries creeping in and affecting his training.

“I wasn’t feeling 100 percent when I was training, and there were a few niggles.

There were times when I was getting frustrated.

My body didn’t feel how I was used to, and it’s something I’ve had to deal with.”

Looking Ahead

Despite the challenges, Foden remains determined to bounce back stronger.

With Manchester City still in the hunt for major trophies, the young star is focused on overcoming fatigue, rediscovering his best form, and proving his leadership qualities in the crucial months ahead.
