In a political twist that few saw coming, Peter Mandelson is now settling into his new role as the UK’s Ambassador to Washington.
What makes this particularly noteworthy? Well, it wasn’t too long ago that he openly criticized Donald Trump, calling him a “bully” and a “threat to the world.”
Fast-forward to today, and he’s singing a very different tune.
A Warm Welcome—And a Change of Heart
Mandelson kicked off his new position with a carefully crafted video message, filmed from the luxurious ambassador’s residence in Washington, D.C.
In the video, he expressed excitement about the opportunity to work with President Trump, despite their rocky history.
He emphasized his deep experience in government, his entrepreneurial ventures—including his successful lobbying firm, Global Counsel—and his readiness to bring his policy expertise to the role.
He also took a moment to thank Americans for the warm reception he and his husband, Reinaldo, had received since their arrival.
Not Everyone Is Impressed
However, not everyone is convinced by Mandelson’s diplomatic enthusiasm.
Chris LaCivita, Trump’s campaign manager, didn’t hold back, calling him an “absolute moron” and suggesting he should have stayed home rather than attempt to work with a leader he once strongly opposed.
Mandelson has since acknowledged that his past criticisms of Trump were “ill-judged and wrong,” adding that attitudes toward the former president have shifted over time.
Trade Tensions and the UK’s Position
Despite his newfound willingness to work with Trump, Mandelson admitted that the UK may not see eye-to-eye with the president on every issue.
In particular, he expressed concerns over potential tariffs and acknowledged that Britain wouldn’t automatically align with every detail of Trump’s agenda.
Speaking to the BBC, he explained that while the US president has a clear mandate for change, Britain must navigate these policies carefully, making its positions known “directly and privately” rather than through public disputes.
With this new chapter in UK-US relations unfolding, the question remains: Can Mandelson truly bridge the gap between his past views and his present role? Only time will tell.
