Deputy President Paul Mashatile has resumed his official responsibilities after recovering from an illness, his office confirmed on Thursday, 8 October 2026.

Mashatile returned to work at the beginning of the week and is expected to gradually resume the full range of his government and political responsibilities.

His return marks the end of a period away from official duties while he recuperated.

Mashatile Thanks South Africans for Support

Following his recovery, Mashatile expressed appreciation to South Africans and others who contacted him during his absence.

He said the messages, prayers and calls he received had been an important part of his recovery.

“Your thoughts, prayers and calls have been greatly appreciated,” Mashatile said.

“They have all made a positive impact on the journey towards recovery. For that, I am most grateful.”

His office also acknowledged the public and media interest surrounding his health during the period he was away from work.

Government Programme Set to Resume

Mashatile is expected to return to a busy official programme in the coming days.

Among his responsibilities will be chairing Cabinet committees and participating in proceedings linked to the upcoming Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement.

The deputy president is also scheduled to engage with interfaith communities as part of his official activities.

NCOP Questions Also on the Agenda

Mashatile is expected to resume his parliamentary responsibilities as well, including answering oral questions in the National Council of Provinces.

His return to these engagements will see him take up the regular duties associated with his position after his period of recuperation.

The Office of the Presidency confirmed that he has already resumed work.

Political Activities to Continue

In addition to his government responsibilities, Mashatile is expected to return to his political programme.

His office did not provide further details about the illness that kept him away from his duties or disclose information about the treatment he received.

The focus of the latest update was instead on confirming his recovery and outlining the official commitments that lie ahead.

Presidency Confirms Return

The Presidency also confirmed Mashatile’s return to work, saying he had officially resumed his duties at the start of the week.

The confirmation provides an update after public attention had focused on the deputy president’s absence and subsequent recovery.

With his official programme now restarting, Mashatile is expected to resume his government, parliamentary and political engagements in the coming days.
