Coup Leaders Thwart Escape Attempt
Leaders of the recent coup in Niger disclosed that the deposed President, Mohamed Bazoum, attempted to escape from their custody.
The spokesperson for the Junta, Amadou Abdramane, revealed that Bazoum and several individuals tried to break free from detention.
Failed Escape Attempt
The escape effort took place in the early hours of the morning when Bazoum, his family, two cooks, and two security personnel attempted to flee.
Fortunately, their escape bid was unsuccessful, leading to the arrest of Bazoum and some of his accomplices. An investigation into the matter is underway.
Escape Plan Details
According to Abdramane, Bazoum’s escape plan involved initially reaching a hideout on the outskirts of the capital, Niamey.
From there, they intended to board helicopters “belonging to a foreign power” with a destination set for Nigeria. This attempt has been criticized as an “irresponsible attitude.”
Bazoum’s Refusal to Resign
Despite the coup that took place in Niger on July 26, 2023, Bazoum has refused to step down from his position. He has been held at his residence within the presidential palace, along with his wife and son. Abdramane did not specify their current location.
Legal Actions and International Involvement
In September, Bazoum’s legal team revealed that he had filed a case with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) court against those responsible for his removal. They also mentioned taking his case to the UN Human Rights Council.
French Troop Withdrawal
In response to the coup, the first group of French soldiers ordered to leave Niger by the post-coup military authorities has arrived in N’Djamena, Chad.
The troops are expected to depart from Chad to France by air, with the withdrawal anticipated to be completed by the end of December.
These French forces were stationed in Niger to combat jihadist groups linked to the Islamic State and Al-Qaeda. France continues to advocate for Bazoum’s release, along with other countries and organizations, but the military regime remains steadfast in their position.
