Both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs are looking to bolster their squads during the current transfer window, but their motivations and league positions paint a very different picture for each club.
Pirates’ Strong Form Pushing for Reinforcements
Orlando Pirates have been on an impressive run in the Betway Premiership this season, sitting comfortably in second place with just one loss to their name—a narrow 1-0 defeat to Stellenbosch FC.
In addition to their solid league position, Pirates have already claimed silverware, successfully defending their MTN8 title against the same team.
To top it off, they’ve secured a spot in the CAF Champions League group stages.
With such strong performances, the club is looking to further strengthen their squad.
Chiefs’ Struggles Fuel Urgency for Reinforcements
On the other hand, Kaizer Chiefs have faced a difficult season.
Despite high hopes following the appointment of coach Nasreddine Nabi, Chiefs finished 2024 in a disappointing seventh place.
The team has had trouble both scoring goals and keeping clean sheets.
One of the players they had their eye on last transfer window was Fawaaz Basadien, the highly-rated left-back for Stellenbosch FC.
Known for his defensive solidity and impressive attacking contributions—five goals, four assists, and clean sheets this season—Basadien has caught the attention of both Chiefs and Pirates.
Pirates Looking to Beat Chiefs to Basadien
Reports suggest that Pirates are now keen to swoop in and sign Basadien before Chiefs can secure his services.
According to Soccer-Laduma, Pirates have a strategy in place to get the left-back by potentially offloading their captain Innocent Maela and Paseka Mako.
Pirates are determined to strengthen their left-back position, hoping that Basadien’s signing will help them excel both locally and in Africa.
Could Chiefs Be Dealt a Major Blow?
If Pirates successfully secure Basadien’s signature—along with Oswin Appollis and Thabang Matuludi—it could be a huge blow to Kaizer Chiefs.
Amakhosi coach Nabi has been vocal about his desire to add experienced and quality players to his squad, and losing all three Bafana Bafana internationals to their archrivals would be a setback.
Chiefs would find it tough to compete with a Pirates squad that is already in stronger form.
Where Should Basadien Go?
If Basadien decides to join Pirates, he would be reunited with his former Stellenbosch teammate, right-back Deano van Rooyen, who made the move to Pirates at the start of the season.
Now, the question remains: If you were Basadien, would you choose the Sea Robbers or Chiefs? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
