Opposition parties demand President Cyril Ramaphosa suspend Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni over corruption allegations in South Africa

Political pressure is mounting on President Cyril Ramaphosa to address serious allegations against Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, Minister in the Presidency.

Opposition parties are urging the President to take decisive action after reports revealed that Ntshavheni is under investigation for corruption tied to her previous role as Municipal Manager of Ba-Phalaborwa Local Municipality in Limpopo.

Hawks Investigation Moves Toward Prosecution

The Hawks, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, have reportedly concluded their investigation into a R2.5 million tender corruption case involving Ntshavheni.

The case is now ready for prosecution, raising questions about her continued role in government amidst such serious allegations.

Opposition Parties Demand Suspension

Democratic Alliance’s Call for Accountability

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has been vocal in demanding Ntshavheni’s immediate suspension.

DA spokesperson on State Security, Dianne Kohler Barnard, criticized Ramaphosa’s judgment, stating that Ntshavheni’s continued position undermines the integrity of the Cabinet.

Kohler Barnard added, “If the President wasn’t aware of these allegations, it’s an indictment.

If he was, it raises even more serious questions about his leadership.”

ActionSA Joins the Chorus

ActionSA also weighed in, urging the President to act swiftly and suspend Ntshavheni.

The party expressed concern over the growing trend of Ramaphosa appointing individuals under criminal investigation to key positions.

ActionSA’s Athol Trollip highlighted the conflict of interest created by Ntshavheni’s leadership of the State Security Agency, comparing her situation to that of other ministers facing similar legal challenges.

EFF Accuses Ramaphosa of Protecting Ntshavheni

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) added their voice to the growing calls for action, accusing President Ramaphosa of shielding Ntshavheni.

The party criticized her for escaping accountability due to her close ties with the President.

EFF spokesperson Leigh-Anne Mathys argued that Ntshavheni’s tenure has been defined by scandals and failures, citing her oversight of the State Security Agency amid rising issues like mass shootings and human trafficking.

A Pattern of Corruption Allegations

Ntshavheni’s case is not an isolated incident but part of a broader pattern of corruption allegations within Ramaphosa’s Cabinet.

Opposition parties argue that these cases reflect the President’s failure to vet candidates thoroughly before appointing them to critical positions.
