Harry Styles performed an unreleased song dedicated to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne during his Madison Square Garden residency on Friday, marking two years since Payne’s death.

The 32-year-old singer introduced the song by reflecting on the people who had supported him throughout his career and the significance of performing at the New York venue.

Styles told the audience that he felt fortunate to perform at Madison Square Garden before revealing that he had lost a close friend two years earlier.

‘What Is Enough’ Dedicated to His Late Friend

Before performing the track, titled What Is Enough, Styles spoke about the importance of caring for people following the loss of someone close.

He told the crowd that many people had experienced similar grief and said looking after one another was important.

Styles then explained that he had written the song for his friend about two years earlier before performing it publicly for the first time.

The track includes the lyric: “I could tell you what it’s like, to bury a friend on a Wednesday night gathered in the garden around a fire.”

Liam Payne Died Aged 31 in Buenos Aires

Payne died aged 31 after suffering injuries in a fall from the balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He became internationally famous as a member of One Direction alongside Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik.

Payne’s funeral took place on Wednesday, November 20, and was attended by his former bandmates and Cheryl, the mother of his son, Bear.

Styles Previously Spoke About Losing Friends

Earlier in the year, Styles discussed the difficult experiences he had faced during a performance in Amsterdam, including losing friends in recent years.

He reflected on the period he spent away from the public spotlight and said the experiences had made him consider the different ways life can be fragile, beautiful, difficult and inspiring.

Styles also expressed hope that sharing a room with fans during his performance would help create a positive atmosphere.

Singer Opens Up About Grief Following Payne’s Death

Styles previously discussed Payne’s death in an interview with DJ Zane Lowe, describing the loss of a friend as difficult, particularly when they shared many similarities.

He said he had struggled with the way other people became involved in his grief and with the expectation that he should express his feelings publicly.

Styles also spoke warmly about Payne, describing him as someone with a kind heart who wanted to succeed.

He said the loss had prompted him to reflect on how he wanted to live his own life, adding that he believed one of the greatest ways to honour friends who had died was to live life to the fullest.
