The Nigerian Army has paid tribute to the late retired Lt.-Gen. Chikadibia Obiakor, describing him as an outstanding soldier, strategic thinker and international peacekeeper whose decades of service helped strengthen Nigeria’s standing in global security affairs.

The tribute was delivered during an Evening of Tributes held in Abuja on Saturday to honour the late general, who died on May 27, 2026, at the age of 75.

COAS Highlights a Career Built on Service

Chief of Army Staff Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu said Obiakor’s career reflected professionalism, courage, intellectual ability, humility and an enduring commitment to serving both Nigeria and humanity.

His message was read at the ceremony by the Chief of Transformation and Innovation (Army), Maj.-Gen. Peter Okoye.

Shaibu said Obiakor entered the Nigerian Army in 1973 after being commissioned as a member of the 10th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

From Nigerian Command to International Peacekeeping

According to the COAS, Obiakor distinguished himself through a series of command and operational appointments in Nigeria before taking on increasingly important responsibilities in international peace-support operations.

One of the notable chapters of his career came in Liberia, where he commanded the ECOMOG Artillery Brigade between 1996 and 1997.

Shaibu said Obiakor also played an important role in coordinating the country’s elections during his time with ECOMOG.

Obiakor Broke New Ground at the United Nations

Obiakor’s international career later reached the highest levels of United Nations peacekeeping.

He became the first Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia, known as UNMIL, where he provided strategic and operational leadership.

In 2008, then UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Obiakor as Military Adviser for UN Peacekeeping Operations at the UN Headquarters in New York.

Shaibu described the appointment as a landmark achievement, noting that Obiakor became the first African to hold the position.

His Service Continued After Retirement

Although Obiakor retired from active military service in 2011, his involvement in international security and peacebuilding did not end.

The COAS said the former general continued to undertake significant United Nations assignments involving conflicts and humanitarian challenges in countries including South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Syria.

In 2018, Obiakor led a UN special investigation into an incident in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He later chaired the UN Secretary-General’s Board of Inquiry into the destruction of humanitarian facilities in north-west Syria.

Army Says His Influence Went Beyond the Uniform

Shaibu said Obiakor’s post-retirement work demonstrated that his commitment to service extended well beyond his years in uniform.

The COAS described him as an ambassador of the Nigerian Army whose international accomplishments showcased the professionalism, competence and values of the service.

He added that Obiakor’s legacy would continue to serve as an example to officers and soldiers seeking to represent Nigeria with honour and distinction.

Artillery Corps Remembers a Mentor

Commander of the Nigerian Army Corps of Artillery, Maj.-Gen. John Adeyemo, also paid tribute to Obiakor, describing him as a distinguished member of the corps and a mentor to younger professionals.

Adeyemo said the late general’s achievements remained a source of pride within the artillery community, particularly because of his contributions to both the Nigerian Army and international peacekeeping.

He described Obiakor’s career as an important part of the history and heritage of the Artillery Corps.

Ben Obi Recalls His Commitment to Peace

Sen. Ben Obi described the late general as a great thinker, strategic leader and peacekeeper who was deeply committed to promoting stability.

Reflecting on their relationship, Obi said the former military officer contributed to efforts aimed at maintaining peace and national stability, particularly during the politically sensitive period leading up to Nigeria’s 2015 general elections.

He said Obiakor consistently used his experience and influence in the interest of peace, demonstrating that his contribution to Nigeria extended beyond his formal military responsibilities.

Family Recalls the Values He Passed On

Speaking on behalf of the family, Chinonso Obiakor expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Army and other dignitaries who attended the tribute ceremony.

He also acknowledged retired Gen. Martin Luther Agwai, the Commander of the Corps of Artillery, members of the organising committee and military officers who contributed to the organisation of the event.

Chinonso extended the family’s appreciation to traditional leaders, the government and people of Anambra, retired military personnel, friends, colleagues and other associates who supported the family.

Son Says His Father’s Lessons Remain

Chinonso said his father placed strong emphasis on values such as patience, contentment and integrity.

Those principles, he noted, have remained with him and taken on even greater significance following his father’s death.

He prayed for God’s blessings upon everyone who attended the event and supported the family during the mourning period.

Military and Diplomatic Community Pays Tribute

The Evening of Tributes attracted serving and retired military officers, members of the diplomatic community, representatives of Ohaneze Ndigbo, family members, friends and professional associates.

Their presence reflected the breadth of Obiakor’s relationships and the impact of his career across Nigeria’s military establishment and the international peacekeeping community.

A Legacy of Nigerian Leadership in Global Security

Obiakor’s career combined senior command responsibilities within the Nigerian Army with influential positions in international peacekeeping.

From ECOMOG operations in Liberia to senior United Nations responsibilities and post-retirement investigations, his work placed him at the centre of several major international security and humanitarian efforts.

The tributes in Abuja underscored the view that his legacy extends beyond his military achievements, with his career standing as an example of Nigeria’s contribution to global peace and security.
