The National Football League said late Thursday that the coaching staff has resigned “with immediate effect.”

Ghana beat Nigeria on the away goals rule on Tuesday to progress to the World Cup finals, which begin in November.

First time in 16 years Nigeria have failed to qualify

It is the first time that Nigeria have failed to qualify for a World Cup finals since 2006.

Emmanuel Amuneke, Salisu Yusuf, Joseph Yobo, goalkeeping specialist Alloy Agu, and Paul Aigbogun were among the coaches fired, in addition to Eguavoen.

“After a thorough examination, a new technical crew will be announced to spearhead the new charge of reinvigorating the Super Eagles in order to confront future difficulties effectively,” the NFF stated.

Eguavoen, a 56-year-old former international defender who was appointed Super Eagles coach in a temporary capacity in December after Frenchman Gernot Rohr was ousted, has been chastised by Nigerian supporters for his tactical style.

He took the three-time African champions to the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16 in Cameroon this year, where Tunisia defeated them.

His contract was later extended for the 2022 World Cup playoffs against Ghana but they failed to qualify.
