…By Lola Smith for TDPel Media. The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has responded to the appointment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Tinubu’s election took place during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS in Guinea-Bissau, replacing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.
Optimism for Addressing Challenges and Enhancing Business:
In a congratulatory message, NACCIMA expressed optimism regarding Tinubu’s ability to address the challenges faced by ECOWAS and implement policies to facilitate smoother business operations within the region.
The President of NACCIMA, Dele Oye, noted that Tinubu’s appointment coincided with ECOWAS member states’ efforts to integrate into the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
As Nigeria holds a significant position as the largest economy in Africa, Oye emphasized the country’s role in the region and stressed the need to overcome obstacles hindering intra-West African trade.
Challenges in Intra-West African Trade:
Oye highlighted the existing impediments to free trade, including cumbersome procedures, high transportation costs, and corruption.
These obstacles have limited trade growth within the region and hampered economic prosperity for West Africans.
Expectations from Tinubu:
NACCIMA acknowledged Nigeria’s crucial role among its African peers and expressed confidence in Tinubu’s credentials as a seasoned politician and astute administrator.
The association expects Tinubu to leverage his experience and expertise to tackle the region’s challenges head-on.
They anticipate that he will implement policies to facilitate business operations and contribute to the economic growth of West Africa.
Commitment to Collaboration:
NACCIMA affirmed its commitment to supporting and collaborating with President Tinubu in promoting economic growth, trade, and investment in West Africa.
They are eager to work alongside him to enhance the region’s business environment and contribute to its overall development.
