The principal of Khangela Primary School in Mpumalanga has been placed on precautionary suspension following his arrest over allegations of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old Grade 6 pupil.

The Mpumalanga Department of Education confirmed the suspension on Thursday, saying it took effect immediately. The department said the decision was intended to protect the investigation, safeguard learners and ensure that teaching and learning continued in a safe environment.

School management and the school governing body have been formally notified, while arrangements are being made to appoint an acting principal.

Department Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Policy on Sexual Abuse

The department condemned all forms of abuse and sexual violence against learners, reiterating that it has a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct by its employees.

It warned that any official found to have breached the trust placed in them would face the department’s full disciplinary process as well as the criminal justice system.

The department said it would cooperate fully with the criminal investigation into the allegations.

Pupil and Family to Receive Ongoing Support

Officials from the department’s inclusive education services, including psychologists and social workers, will provide assistance to the affected pupil and her family.

Support will also be made available to classmates and educators who may have been affected by the incident.

The department said the assistance would continue for as long as necessary, adding that the wellbeing of the child remained its priority.

Internal Investigation and Professional Referral Under Way

Alongside the criminal investigation, the department has launched its own internal inquiry into the matter.

The case will also be referred to the South African Council for Educators, the professional body responsible for educators.

The department urged the school community and members of the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to proceed.

Public Warned Against Identifying the Child

The department has appealed to the public not to share information that could reveal the identity of the minor involved in the case.

It specifically warned against publishing the pupil’s name, photographs or other identifying details on social media or any other public platform.

The department said the request was intended to protect the child and comply with the Children’s Act and the Criminal Law Amendment Act.

Department Encourages Reporting of Abuse

Pupils, parents and educators have been encouraged to report suspected abuse through their schools, district offices, the department’s toll-free line or the police.

The department reiterated its commitment to protecting learners and ensuring that allegations of sexual misconduct are addressed through the appropriate disciplinary and legal processes.
