Maro Itoje makes bold decision to remain in England rather than chase a Top 14 deal in France as he prepares for first match as captain at Twickenham

Maro Itoje had a big decision to make—stay in England or take his talents to France.

With offers from clubs like Toulouse and Racing 92, the opportunity to play in the Top 14 was tempting.

Many of his England teammates, including Jack Willis, Owen Farrell, and Courtney Lawes, had already made the switch.

But for Itoje, something didn’t feel right about leaving just yet.

The Unfinished Business with England

Instead of following the exodus of English talent to France, Itoje chose to stay at Saracens and sign a new contract.

That decision paid off when he was named England captain, and now, he’s set to lead the team at Twickenham for the first time.

“I didn’t move to France because I wanted to keep playing for England,” Itoje explained.

“I wasn’t ready to walk away from this chapter of my career.

If I had gone, I would have been watching England play from a distance, and I wouldn’t have been at peace with that.”

For Itoje, the timing just wasn’t right. While other factors could have influenced his decision, his commitment to the national team ultimately kept him in England.

The Impact of Overseas Moves on England Selection

Under current RFU rules, England players competing abroad are ineligible for national selection.

That rule has led to an ongoing debate, as several top players have taken their skills elsewhere, leaving the squad with less experience.

“We want the best players available for England,” Itoje said.

“But everyone has their own career to think about.

You have to make decisions that work for you. I respect all the guys who moved overseas, and I wish them the best.”

Even if England changed its selection policy, Itoje pointed out that competition within the squad is fierce.

“Being available doesn’t mean you’ll be picked,” he added. “Nothing is guaranteed in this game.”

Jack Willis Thriving in France

One of the biggest names missing from the England squad is Jack Willis.

Since moving to Toulouse, he has become one of the Top 14’s standout forwards, forming a strong partnership with Antoine Dupont.

Dupont himself was surprised by Willis’s absence from the England squad.

“I expected to see him there,” he admitted.

“But, to be honest, I’m not complaining. We all know what a nightmare he can be in the ruck.”

With more English stars thriving overseas, the debate over selection rules is likely to continue.

But for now, Itoje remains focused on leading his team at Twickenham, proving that his decision to stay was the right one.
