David Dutch, a 57-year-old Marine who was shot twice during a recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, has made his first public statement since leaving the hospital.
Dutch, who was shot on July 13 while standing behind the stage at Trump’s rally, expressed his heartfelt thanks through his attorney.
His statement was released on Wednesday evening and praised the outpouring of support from friends, fellow Americans, and people around the world. He was initially placed in a medically-induced coma due to severe gunshot wounds to his chest and liver.
The statement also extended gratitude to those who played a role in saving his life. This includes police officers, medics, the life flight crew, and the medical team at Allegheny General Hospital.
Dutch and his family also offered their thoughts and prayers for other victims of the attack: Corey Comperatore, who lost his life shielding his family; James Copenhaver, who survived despite being shot twice; and President Trump, who continues to fight for his vision for America.
Legal Representation and Recovery
Dutch and Copenhaver, who was also critically injured in the attack, have both secured legal representation from Nicholas Feldman and Joseph Feldman of the Law Offices of Max C Feldman.
Copenhaver is currently recovering at a rehabilitation center after being hit in the arm and abdomen. His attorney noted that he initially didn’t realize he had been shot a second time, possibly due to shock.
The Attack and Security Lapses
The shooting occurred during Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire. While he missed Trump, he tragically killed Corey Comperatore.
Crooks was eventually killed by a Secret Service sniper. There are ongoing investigations into the security breaches that allowed Crooks to carry out his attack. Prior to the shooting, Crooks was flagged as a suspicious individual and had been seen near the event site, yet he managed to climb onto the AGR building roof to target Trump.
Investigation into Crooks
The FBI is investigating Crooks’ motive and background. He was previously investigated for threats made during his school years, though the threat was not taken seriously at the time. This aspect is now being re-examined as part of the ongoing probe.
Trump’s Response
In his first interview since the incident, Trump remarked that his survival could be attributed to either luck or divine intervention.
