Man Found Dead in Drogheda Days After Arrest in Connection with Kyran Durnin’s Disappearance and Murder Investigation

A man arrested in connection with the disappearance and presumed murder of Kyran Durnin has been found dead.

The discovery came just days after he reportedly told neighbors he had no involvement in the child’s disappearance.

The man, aged in his 30s, had been detained last week in relation to the case.

Arrest and Investigation

Authorities began searching homes in Drogheda, County Louth, looking for evidence related to Kyran’s disappearance.

The arrest of the man was part of this investigation.

Gardaí confirmed the discovery of the man’s body on Tuesday, December 17, 2024: “Earlier today, Gardai and emergency services were alerted following the discovery of a body of a male aged in his 30s in a domestic residence in Drogheda.”

The local Coroner has been notified, and a post-mortem will determine the cause of death.

Early reports suggest the situation is a personal tragedy, though the investigation into his death continues.

The Connection to Kyran Durnin

The deceased man had ties to the Durnin family and was known to have had access to Kyran before his last confirmed sighting in 2022.

He was also closely associated with another key suspect in the case.

One of the leads Gardaí were exploring was the possibility that the man helped cover up Kyran’s disappearance by misleading child protection workers.

Reports from October indicated that Gardaí were investigating whether another child had been used to impersonate Kyran in an attempt to deceive social workers.

The man had been released from Garda custody last Friday after being questioned for 24 hours under suspicion of murder.

Ongoing Investigation

Despite extensive efforts, including searches in Dundalk in October and more in Drogheda this week, Kyran’s remains have still not been found.

Gardaí continue to investigate the case, which began when Kyran was reported missing from his home in Drogheda on August 30, 2022.

A woman in her 20s was also arrested this week on suspicion of murder but was released without charge the following evening.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris noted the substantial number of tips and information the public has provided, helping to guide the investigation forward.

Public and Official Responses

The Child and Family Agency, Tusla, has been involved in the case.

A report on their engagement with Kyran’s family was sent to Minister for Children, Roderic O’Gorman.

While the details of the report remain private due to the ongoing investigation, O’Gorman expressed concerns about certain aspects of how the case was handled.

“I asked Tusla to undertake their own review and bring forward any proposals or changes that they need to make to their operations,” O’Gorman said.

Call for Information

Gardaí continue to urge anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward.

The public is encouraged to contact Drogheda Garda Station or the Garda confidential line with any details that may assist the investigation.

This case remains active, and further updates will follow as authorities continue to search for answers in the disappearance of Kyran Durnin.
