With the January transfer window in full swing, Mamelodi Sundowns appear to be reevaluating their roster, aiming to address the challenge of managing their talent-heavy squad.
While their depth has been a source of strength, it has also left several players struggling for game time.
Zuko Mdunyelwa’s Struggles at Sundowns
One such player is right-back Zuko Mdunyelwa, who joined the Brazilians just a year ago.
Despite his potential and earlier links to Orlando Pirates, Mdunyelwa has found it difficult to secure a spot in the matchday squad.
Sundowns signed him amid fierce competition, with Pirates eventually settling for Thabiso Lebitso, who joined on a free transfer after leaving Chippa United.
Pirates Strengthened Their Roster While Mdunyelwa Waited
In subsequent transfer windows, Pirates continued to bolster their ranks by acquiring Deano van Rooyen from Stellenbosch FC. Meanwhile, Mdunyelwa’s situation at Sundowns remained unchanged.
Behind Khuliso Mudau and Thapelo Morena in the pecking order, the young talent has seen limited opportunities to showcase his skills.
Loan Move on the Horizon
According to sources close to the club, Sundowns are now actively exploring a loan move for Mdunyelwa in the current transfer window.
Reports suggest that negotiations are underway, with the technical team fully supporting the idea.
“This move would allow Zuko more game time, which is crucial for his development,” a source revealed.
“While the coaches value his abilities, they currently favor Mudau, Morena, and even the now-injured Kegan Johannes.
The plan is to loan him out while monitoring Mudau’s potential moves to Europe or North Africa.
If Mudau leaves, Mdunyelwa could be recalled to fill the gap.”
Sundowns Fans React
The prospect of loaning out Mdunyelwa has sparked mixed reactions among Sundowns fans.
While some see it as a practical decision to help the player grow, others are concerned about losing a promising talent to rival clubs.
