New York City First Lady Rama Duwaji has found herself at the center of political debate after reports revealed she traveled to Spain just days before the United States marked its 250th Independence Day.

According to reports, Duwaji was seen departing from Newark Airport on a transatlantic flight last week, shortly after Mayor Mamdani encouraged New Yorkers to conserve energy during a period of intense summer heat.
The timing prompted criticism from conservative commentators, who contrasted the mayor’s public appeals for residents to limit electricity use with his wife’s overseas travel.

Participants reportedly paid approximately $3,400 to attend the sold-out event, which began last Wednesday and concludes on Monday.
Duwaji Serving as Artist-in-Residence
Rather than attending solely as a guest, Duwaji is reportedly serving as both an artist-in-residence and co-host during the retreat.
An illustrator and ceramic artist, the 29-year-old is expected to contribute creative workshops alongside discussions exploring the relationship between faith, art and the natural world.
Her office has not publicly commented on reports concerning her participation, despite media requests seeking confirmation.
Another European Engagement Scheduled
Following the Mallorca program, Duwaji is expected to continue her European itinerary by traveling to Corsica, France.
There, she is scheduled to help lead another fully booked retreat titled “Mary in the Quran,” which will run from July 9 to July 14.
The event focuses on the life and significance of Mary, who holds a prominent place in Islamic tradition as the most revered woman mentioned in the Quran.
