Magnitude 5 earthquake shakes southern Taiwan

Taipei, April 10 (CNA) A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck at sea off southern Taiwan at 00:43 a.m. Sunday, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The earthquake was centered 124.0 kilometers south of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 29.7 kilometers, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.

The intensity, which gauges the actual effect of an earthquake, was highest in Pingtung County, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale, according to CWB data.

The quake had an intensity of 2 in Taitung County, and 1 in Tainan, the data showed.

No damage or injuries from the earthquake were reported as of press time.
