Giorgi and Leonardo Antinori, a couple from Los Angeles, have shared their devastation after losing the ashes of their one-year-old daughter, Vita, in the catastrophic wildfires that have ravaged the region.
Holding back tears, the couple described how their home, along with the remains of their beloved daughter, was reduced to ashes when their property was consumed by the flames.
The Loss of Their Daughter’s Ashes
“It’s like every memory, every piece of physical evidence of her life, is just gone,” said Giorgi, 37, a music producer. “And that hurts.
I feel numb right now because I feel like I’ve cried all of my emotions.”
The ashes of their daughter, who passed away 15 years ago, were kept in their home, a memory of their firstborn child.
Now, they are left with nothing but the void of loss.
The couple’s home, a blue wooden bungalow located in the Palisades Bowl, was part of a mobile home community just across from the beach.
The fires destroyed nearly 200 homes, leaving residents like the Antinoris with nothing but charred remains and their hearts shattered.
“It’s so mind-boggling what happened and so tragic that you just don’t have words for it,” Leonardo, 41, who runs NewVine Music & Publishing, shared.
Struggling with Financial Ruin
To make matters worse, the Antinori family had to stop paying their insurance premiums due to financial hardship caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The couple explained that during the lockdowns, their business struggled to stay afloat, and the increasing insurance premiums became unaffordable. Giorgi said, “Like hundreds of other people, the prices of insurance just got so high.
We thought we’d recover quickly, and then we’d just pick up our insurance again.”
Sadly, this decision meant that their home wasn’t covered when disaster struck.
“We never, ever in 100 million years thought that our house would go up in flames,” Giorgi added.
Their inability to keep up with the rising insurance costs has left them with no safety net, along with many other residents of the mobile home community who face the same hardship.
An Urgent Need for Help
Despite their heartbreaking loss, the Antinoris are trying to remain hopeful, with a GoFundMe campaign raising $68,000 for them and their two-year-old daughter.
However, this amount is still far from enough to help them fully recover.
The couple has yet to receive any financial assistance from the state or federal government.
“We ask all of our friends, family, community, and even strangers to please come together and help in any way that you can,” says the fundraiser.
A Devastating Wildfire Season
The Palisades Fire, one of the largest wildfires currently engulfing Los Angeles, has already scorched 23,000 acres and remains uncontrolled.
The fire is part of a series of devastating blazes that have wreaked havoc across the state, destroying thousands of homes and forcing 100,000 people to evacuate.
Tragically, at least 24 people have lost their lives.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has warned that the disaster could be one of the most devastating in U.S. history.
With dangerously high winds expected to return, firefighting efforts are in jeopardy, and the region’s residents are left grappling with the destruction and loss.
