Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, is now the subject of an official investigation following his decision to accept free tickets for Taylor Swift’s sold-out concerts at Wembley Stadium last year.
The inquiry will focus on whether the mayor acted with the necessary caution when he accepted tickets valued at £3,000 to attend Swift’s highly anticipated Eras tour.
The Allegations
The controversy began when Tory politician Susie Hall, who lost the mayoral election to Khan last year, called for an investigation.
She questioned Khan’s decision to accept six tickets worth £500 each for Swift’s performances in London in the summer.
Khan attended one of the concerts on August 15, shortly after Swift’s entourage was granted a police escort due to a bomb threat that had forced her to cancel a show in Austria.
The tickets’ value and the VIP treatment Swift received raised concerns, especially considering the significant increase in policing costs for the concerts.
The Policing Costs and Swift’s Security
Swift’s August performances saw a marked increase in police spending.
The total cost of security during the five-night stint was significantly higher than for the earlier June dates.
While June’s concerts saw a police cost of £206,557 for three nights, the August concerts cost £498,391, reflecting a nightly increase of over £30,000.
The police presence also grew, with 162 officers deployed per night in August, compared to 111 in June.
These additional costs were partly covered by Swift herself.
The Investigation’s Focus
The Greater London Authority (GLA) confirmed that while three of the four original allegations against Khan had been dismissed, an investigation will proceed to determine if he properly considered the implications of accepting the free tickets.
The allegations dismissed include concerns about late declarations and whether LS Events, the donor, had any potential conflicts of interest with GLA contracts.
However, the investigation will still look into whether the mayor exercised due caution in his decision.
Public Reactions and Calls for Accountability
Susie Hall expressed her disappointment that certain aspects of the issue weren’t being investigated, such as Khan’s late declaration of the tickets and the undervaluation of their worth.
She also emphasized the need for greater transparency, particularly regarding the connection between the donor and the GLA.
Khan’s office defended the mayor, stating that any gifts he accepts are declared transparently.
They acknowledged a mistake in the initial declaration but assured that the issue had been corrected.
Furthermore, they clarified that Khan had no involvement in the procurement process for GLA events or the tendering of contracts.
Swift’s Police Escort and Political Pressure
The situation surrounding the police escort granted to Swift’s team has also attracted political attention.
Some politicians were accused of pressuring the police to provide this service for Swift’s entourage.
This followed the cancellation of her previous show in Austria due to a suicide bomb threat, although no specific threats were made regarding her UK concerts.
When questioned about the matter at a London Assembly session, Khan maintained that he had never interfered in police operations but admitted that he often communicated with the police commissioner about significant events in the capital.
What’s Next?
As the investigation continues, many are awaiting further clarification on the mayor’s actions and the larger implications for transparency and accountability in public office.
With growing concerns about the costs and the handling of the free tickets, more answers are expected soon.
