KZN weather: More disruptive rain and thundershowers expected

The weather service said the rain could lead to localised flooding of susceptible settlements, low lying areas and bridges.

Difficult driving conditions are also expected over parts of Ugu and Harry Gwala District Municipalities on Sunday afternoon/evening.

“A surface high pressure system is expected to ridge along the coast, coupled with an upper air trough over the interior. This will result in afternoon and evening scattered showers and thundershowers over the southern parts of KZN.”

SAWS said rain has been observed over the aforementioned district municipalities in the last few days and is still expected to continue.

UPDATE ON FLOODS

KZN Premier, Sihle Zikalala held a media briefing to provide an update on the response to the floods

As of Sunday, 24 April 2022, the death toll stands at 435 and 54 people are still reported missing.

A total of 17 438 households have been affected by the floods wherein 121 687 people were affected. A total of 6278 people are currently homeless.

During the briefing, Zikalala said there has been improvement in water supply in parts of eThekwini however, there are challenges.

“We have reported challenges in the South which is due to the damage to the Umlazi Canal Pipeline which affects water supply in many parts of the Southern region. The damage to out oThongathi Water Treatment Plant has also affected the supply of water in the entire in the Northern region.

“Unfortunately the entire system requires a full upgrade and this will take approximately six months.”
