Concerns Over Ayingba Killings
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has taken swift action in response to the recent invasion and killings in the Ayingba local government area of Kogi State.
The incident has raised alarm ahead of the upcoming governorship election in the state, prompting a call for a thorough investigation.
IGP’s Order for Investigation
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Force Public Relations officer, Oluwamuyiwa Adejoboi, announced that the IGP had given orders to investigate the troubling events in Ayingba.
This directive came during a meeting with various stakeholders in the state as preparations for the Governorship election on November 11, 2023, intensified.
Stakeholders’ Engagement
The meeting, which gathered political leaders, representatives of political parties, civil society organizations, electoral authorities, traditional and religious leaders, youth leaders, and security agencies, aimed to foster constructive dialogue, information sharing, and deliberations on ensuring a free, fair, credible, and peaceful electoral process in the state.
Addressing the Ayingba Incident
During the meeting, the Inspector General of Police addressed a trending video depicting an incident in Anyigba.
The video alleged that armed men had attacked the residence of a key official in one of the political parties. In response, the IGP charged the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) with taking over the case for a comprehensive investigation.
Ensuring Justice and Accountability
The primary objective of this investigation is to establish all parties involved, determine their respective levels of involvement, and ensure that justice prevails in the matter.
The IGP’s quick response underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and security during the election and hold wrongdoers accountable.
As the investigation unfolds, it is expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the Ayingba incident and contribute to a secure and transparent electoral process in Kogi State.
