Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo Issues Apology for Abuja Airport Flight Disruptions

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has extended an apology for the flight disruptions experienced at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

The disruptions, affecting operations across the country, were attributed to an incident involving an Aerocontractors plane on Sunday.

Runway Incursion: Incident Details and Safety Measures

The disturbance occurred when a plane on a Lagos-Abuja flight, operated by Aerocontractors, experienced a runway incursion at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The aircraft’s nose wheel got stuck on the ground while taxiing on Runway A4. Fortunately, no passengers sustained injuries, and they were safely evacuated from the plane during efforts to clear the runway.

Safety Investigation Initiated by Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB)

Promptly responding to the serious incident, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) initiated an investigation to delve into the circumstances surrounding the runway incursion.

This investigation aims to uncover the root causes and contribute to improving safety protocols in aviation.

Keyamo’s Confirmation and Urgent Need for a Second Runway

In a communication posted on X, Minister Festus Keyamo confirmed that the disruptions were a result of the Abuja runway incident, making it challenging for other aircraft to land temporarily.

He underscored the urgent necessity for the construction of a second runway at the Abuja Airport, emphasizing that securing the land for this purpose was one of his initial tasks as the Aviation Minister.

Progress on Second Runway: Keyamo’s Efforts and Recent Developments

Keyamo highlighted the proactive steps taken towards addressing the airport’s infrastructure challenges. Just two weeks prior to the incident, construction contractors had commenced work on the construction of the Abuja second runway.
