A newly released 911 call has shed light on the devastating moments that followed the tragic shooting of a Kentucky judge in his courthouse.
The call reveals a frantic plea for help after District Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, was fatally shot in his chambers on September 19.
A Disturbing 911 Call Leads to Emergency Response
In the 911 call, the dispatcher hears the caller urgently stating, “I’ve got an emergency at the courthouse, I need an ambulance here right now. The judge has been shot.”
Law enforcement rushed to the scene, where Mullins was confirmed dead.
His accused killer, 43-year-old Shawn “Mickey” Stines, surrendered peacefully after the shooting.
The Events Leading Up to the Shooting
Shawn Stines, a former sheriff, is accused of entering Judge Mullins’ chambers for a private conversation, locking the door behind him, and then shooting him eight times.
Just hours before the deadly encounter, the two men had shared a lunch together at a local bar, Streetside Grill & Bar, where they often dined.
The pair had their usual meal—wings with salad—before Stines took a tragic turn.
The Connection Between Stines and Mullins
Stines had worked as Mullins’ bailiff before becoming sheriff in 2018.
Described as a loving father of two who was planning to retire soon, Stines had a close relationship with the judge.
His defense attorney, Jeremy Bartley, has pointed to a deposition Stines gave in a lawsuit just before the shooting, suggesting it will play a key role in his defense.
Allegations of Corruption and Misconduct in the Judge’s Chambers
Following the shooting, shocking allegations surfaced about Judge Mullins.
A witness, Sabrina Adkins, claimed she saw Mullins engaging in sexual activity with an unidentified woman in the very chambers where he was killed.
Adkins also mentioned that former Deputy Sheriff Ben Fields had videotapes showing Mullins and other individuals engaging in sexual activities with women in the judge’s office.
These revelations raise questions about the nature of the relationship between Mullins, Fields, and others, with some suggesting the courtroom may have been involved in a broader sex extortion scheme.
Fields had been convicted of coercing Adkins into sexual favors, allegedly using his position to exploit her while she was under home incarceration.
Stines’ Defense and the Upcoming Legal Battle
Despite admitting to the shooting, Stines pleaded not guilty to murder, claiming the act occurred “in the heat of passion” and should be classified as manslaughter at most.
His defense attorneys have suggested that the case will hinge on the lawsuit involving Fields and his misconduct, which has complicated the case.
As the case unfolds, the community is left grappling with the shocking events that led to the tragic death of Judge Mullins and the deep-rooted corruption that allegedly plagued the courthouse.
