Kamala Harris Faces Mixed Reactions from Neighbors Upon Returning to Los Angeles After Leaving the White House

Kamala Harris has made her return to Los Angeles after leaving the White House, but her homecoming wasn’t as warm as she might have hoped.

While her primary reason for coming back was to thank Los Angeles firefighters for their efforts during the recent wildfires, Harris’s return to the exclusive neighborhood of Brentwood didn’t go over smoothly with some of her neighbors.

The area, which once housed the infamous O.J. Simpson, was not particularly welcoming for the former vice president.

Discontent Among Neighbors in Brentwood

One resident, Lewis, a local real estate investor, expressed his embarrassment over having Harris as a neighbor.

He wasn’t shy in voicing his frustration, pointing to the state of California under the leadership of current Democratic officials.

“Karen Bass, Gavin Newsom, they’ve destroyed my state. Kamala Harris will do exactly the same,” Lewis said.

His sentiment was clear: he didn’t want Harris to run for governor in 2026, claiming she’d only continue to harm the state.

Other residents shared concerns about the inconvenience caused by Harris’s frequent visits.

One neighbor pointed out the road closures whenever she comes into town, which only added to their frustration with her presence.

Security and Personal Visit to Firefighters

Despite the chilly reception from some locals, Harris’s return was protected by four black SUVs as part of her ongoing Secret Service security detail, which will last for six months.

She flew back to California on a jet piloted by an all-female crew, a symbolic touch marking the occasion.

Once in California, Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, visited a World Central Kitchen stop in Altadena, where they served meals to firefighters who had been working tirelessly in the fire-ravaged areas.

“We wanted to come out … and just let people know that we see them and that they are cared for,” Harris shared during her visit.

A Mixed Welcome Among Brentwood Residents

While some neighbors weren’t thrilled about Harris’s return, others were more accepting.

Morlene Keller, an interior designer who lives nearby, admitted she was glad to see Harris back, although she wished it wasn’t for political reasons.

“I wish she were back in Washington, but I’m happy to have her back,” Keller said.

Peggy Garrity, a retired lawyer, echoed these sentiments.

Despite her political differences, she found it a “delight” to have Harris as a neighbor, even though she noted that the blocked roads on Sunset Boulevard could be frustrating for residents.

Harris’s Political Future and Struggles

Harris’s return to California marks a turbulent time in her political career.

Sources close to her have reported that she’s deeply saddened by President Biden’s recent comments about his ability to win the 2024 election had he not dropped out.

Many close to her feel that Biden’s remarks, implying that he would have won the election, highlight the one-sided nature of their political partnership.

In addition to the frustration from the Biden camp, Harris’s political career has been riddled with workplace difficulties.

When she was California’s Attorney General, reports of a “toxic” workplace emerged, and her time in the Senate wasn’t much better.

Harris’s office had one of the highest staff turnover rates among all senators, and former colleagues have described her as someone who often delivered harsh and “soul-destroying” criticism.

What’s Next for Kamala Harris?

Despite these challenges, Harris is not done with politics.

Many strategists in Washington expect her to either run for governor of California in 2026 or make another bid for the presidency in 2028.

Additionally, rumors are swirling that she might follow the path of other former politicians and publish a book recounting her time in Washington.

However, should she return to politics, Harris may face the same obstacles that have hindered her ambitions in the past.

Whether she can overcome them and rebuild her political career remains to be seen.
