When it comes to South African football, Kaizer Chiefs has long been known as the glamour club.
This reputation was sparked by one man – the legendary Kaizer Motaung Snr.
His return to South Africa after playing football in America marked the beginning of Chiefs’ iconic rise in both style and stature.
The Charisma of Kaizer Motaung Snr
Kaizer Motaung Snr was not just a footballer; he was a force of nature.
His fashion sense and magnetic presence became a hallmark of the club he was building.
Chiefs quickly became synonymous with Motaung’s distinct style, and he made sure the club was as glamorous as it was successful.
Motaung Snr’s arrival in South African football was a game-changer.
He had an aura of authority and control that attracted the best players in the country, all eager to be part of the Chiefs’ dream.
A Personal Touch: Motaung Snr Signs Frank Makua
One of the most memorable moments of Kaizer Motaung Snr’s influence came when he personally signed players for the club.
Imagine being a boyhood fan of Chiefs and having the man himself show up at your door to make your dreams come true.
For former Amakhosi star Frank Makua, this was a reality.
In an interview with KickOff.com, Makua fondly recalled how Motaung Snr came to his home to sign him for the club.
“It was Kaizer Chiefs (his favourite club).
I fell in love with the way players like Teenage Dladla and Sputla Nhlapo played the game.
My father was the biggest Chiefs fan,” said Makua.
“I’m one of the lucky few players for whom the club’s chairman, Kaizer Motaung, personally came to my home to sign me for them.”
Makua’s First Goal for Chiefs
Makua went on to become a key player for the team, and he has never forgotten his first goal for Chiefs.
“It was against QwaQwa Stars at Rand Stadium in 1995.
Thabang Lebese played a one-two with Isaac Kungwane, who spotted me making a run and unleashed a good through ball.
I struck it immediately when it reached me, and it went in from outside the box,” Makua remembered.
This goal remains a standout moment in his career, as well as in the history of Kaizer Chiefs.
