Kaizer Chiefs are on the lookout for a new left-back as they prepare for the upcoming season.
The latest buzz is their interest in Stellenbosch FC’s left-back Fawaaz Basadien, a player they’ve had their eyes on before.
Last December, Chiefs made a move for Basadien, but he decided to stick with Stellenbosch, signing a long-term deal with the Cape Winelands club.
With key players like Sfiso Hlanti leaving, Chiefs need to bolster their defense, especially on the left side.
Right now, Happy Mashiane and Edmilson Dove are holding down the fort, but Chiefs are keen to add depth.
They might even bring in two new left-backs to ensure they’re covered for the new season.
Kaizer Chiefs recently reached out to Stellenbosch to see if Basadien is available.
However, Stellenbosch made it clear that he’s not for sale.
They’re gearing up for a tough season, competing in five tournaments including the CAF Confederation Cup, and they want to keep their key players.
In their mission to find a replacement for Hlanti, Chiefs have identified a couple of top targets.
The new technical team, led by coach Nabi, is actively searching for defensive reinforcements.
One standout candidate is Rushwin Dortley from Cape Town Spurs.
Dortley’s flexibility in playing various defensive roles has caught the attention of Chiefs’ scouts, who believe he could be a valuable addition to their squad.
Cape Town Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou commented on Dortley’s future, noting significant interest in the player but keeping specifics under wraps.
He mentioned, “There’s a lot of interest in the player, we will see what happens.
We will never disclose which teams are interested.
But Kaizer Chiefs, yeah, they were interested about two years ago, I’m not sure what happened.”
Anderson Cruz: Another Strong Contender
Another name that came up in Chiefs’ left-back search was Anderson Cruz from Petro de Luanda.
Cruz’s strong defensive and offensive skills, along with his international experience in Portugal, Spain, and Bolivia, made him an attractive option.
His stellar performances in domestic competitions didn’t go unnoticed.
Despite the initial interest, Chiefs have reportedly shifted their focus and agreed to terms with Orlando Pirates for Bongani Sam.
As they continue to fine-tune their squad for the 2024/25 season, securing the right left-back is still a top priority in their bid for both domestic and continental glory.
