A 61-year-old man accused of murdering a housing officer at a sheltered accommodation complex in Bridgend, South Wales, has appeared before magistrates.

Clifford Foster appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court on Friday, limping into the dock with a crutch and displaying a swollen eye and bruising to his face.

He gave his address as the Ger-Y-Nant sheltered accommodation, where the alleged attack took place.

When asked by the magistrate to stand, Foster replied: “I can hear you from here.”

He confirmed his name and date of birth during the brief hearing, which lasted approximately three minutes.

Foster was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday.

Housing Officer Died After Stabbing

Foster is accused of murdering Eleanor Barnfield, 47, who suffered serious injuries in an attack at her workplace on Monday, October 19.

Ms Barnfield, a mother of two and grandmother, was reportedly stabbed as she got into her car at the Ger-Y-Nant complex, which is managed by the Valleys to Coast housing association.

It was previously reported that Foster was allegedly inside a flat at the complex when the attack occurred.

After being injured, Ms Barnfield drove a short distance before collapsing at the wheel and crashing into a wall on Coity Road.

Emergency services were alerted to the road traffic collision at approximately 12.43pm.

Paramedics discovered that she had sustained puncture wounds that were not associated with the crash. She was taken to hospital but later died.

Armed Police Responded to Incident

The alleged attacker reportedly barricaded himself inside a room at the sheltered accommodation, prompting a major police operation involving armed officers.

Residents were evacuated while officers responded to the incident.

A man was subsequently seen being escorted to a police van by at least four uniformed officers.

The operation included a significant police presence around the residential complex and nearby streets, with some residents describing the disruption caused by the cordons and restrictions on movement.

Residents have since been allowed to return to the complex, which contains 13 social housing flats for people aged over 60.

Family Pays Tribute to Eleanor Barnfield

Ms Barnfield’s family paid tribute to her following her death, describing her as the “kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world”.

In a statement, they said: “She meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends. She was our rock.”

Floral tributes have been placed near the damaged brick wall on Coity Road where Ms Barnfield’s car crashed.

The wall was covered with orange plastic mesh following the incident.

One tribute described Ms Barnfield as a close friend whose support had helped the writer through life.

“My beautiful friend there are no words to describe how broken I am. You were my rock. You have kept me going through life. I will be forever grateful,” the message read.

It continued: “I will miss you forever. My life will never be the same without you, my heart breaks for your friends and family, your memory will always be kept alive.”

Another tribute read: “Deeply saddened of your loss. Our thoughts are with you and your family.”

Police Urge Public Not to Speculate

South Wales Police confirmed that Foster had been charged with murder in connection with Ms Barnfield’s death.

Senior Investigating Officer Claire Lamerton said specialist officers continued to support the victim’s loved ones.

“My thoughts remain with Eleanor’s loved ones at such a devastating time, and they continue to be supported by specialist officers,” she said.

She also clarified that the investigation was not being treated as a domestic incident and urged the public not to speculate about the circumstances now that court proceedings were active.

Ambulance Service Addresses Reports of Emergency Call

The Welsh Ambulance Service responded to reports that Ms Barnfield had attempted to drive herself to hospital after calling 999.

A spokesman said preliminary investigations had not identified any calls from telephone numbers associated with Ms Barnfield.

“Following preliminary investigations by the Welsh Ambulance Service, the Trust has been unable to identify any calls from Eleanor Barnfield’s phone numbers,” the spokesman said.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish if any calls were received by other means.”

The service had previously confirmed that it was called at approximately 12.44pm on Monday following reports of a collision on Coity Road.

A Cymru High Acuity Response Unit arrived at 12.51pm, seven minutes after the initial call.

Two emergency ambulances subsequently arrived at 1.07pm and 1.13pm.

Advanced critical care support was also provided by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service, which arrived by helicopter operated by the Wales Air Ambulance charity.

Ms Barnfield was transported to hospital by road.

The service said reports circulating on social media about an alleged delay in the ambulance response were misleading.

It stated that the claims were factually untrue and urged members of the public not to speculate.

Housing Association Remembers Colleague

Valleys to Coast confirmed that Ms Barnfield was a member of its team and said her death had deeply affected colleagues.

In a statement, the housing association said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic incident in Bridgend on October 19 and can confirm that a member of our team was involved.”

The organisation described Ms Barnfield as a valued employee who had made an important contribution to its work and the communities it served.

It added that she would be remembered with warmth and affection by those who worked alongside her, while extending its sympathies to her family and friends.

The association also said it was providing support to people affected by her death.

Residents Describe Police Operation

Sue Thomas, who lives opposite the residential complex, said residents had been allowed to return but were required to sign in and out.

“You don’t expect to go to work and not come home. I feel for her family,” she said.

Gavin Owen, who lives near the scene, described seeing a large police operation unfold around his home.

He said the streets were cordoned off and that he initially felt frightened and worried because he did not know what was happening.

Owen explained that officers escorted him to his front door after checking where he lived. Residents were told they would need to sign in and out when entering or leaving the area.

He also said police officers interviewed residents and requested footage from doorbell cameras.

According to Owen, the police presence expanded as the operation continued, with uniformed officers, plain-clothes personnel, riot police and a tactical team arriving at the scene.

He described officers using ladders and running cables onto a roof during the operation.

Foster remains in custody and is scheduled to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on Monday.
