Kaizer Chiefs DStv Diski Challenge head coach Vela Khumalo has acknowledged that the club had an opportunity to sign Cape Town City youngster Emile Witbooi before the teenager emerged as one of South Africa’s most closely watched prospects.

The 18-year-old has attracted growing attention after playing a key role for Amajita, including scoring in the final as South Africa defeated Mozambique 4-2 to win the U20 COSAFA Cup.

With interest in Witbooi reportedly extending beyond South Africa, Chiefs are now facing questions over how the talented attacker slipped through their youth system.

Witbooi Had Already Been on Chiefs’ Radar

Khumalo revealed that Witbooi was previously assessed by Kaizer Chiefs when he was still very young.

According to the coach, the youngster came to the club for an assessment at U13 level, but his ability was not immediately obvious to the technical team.

Khumalo explained that Witbooi was simply too young at the time for the club to make a clear judgement about his long-term potential.

Chiefs Later Considered Bringing Him Back

The situation changed as Witbooi continued to develop.

Khumalo said he later remembered the young player and suggested that Chiefs should bring him back for another assessment.

However, by then, the opportunity had already passed.

He recalled asking Walter Steenbok, who was the club’s technical director at the time, about bringing Witbooi back. According to Khumalo, Steenbok told him that Chiefs had failed to secure the youngster previously and that he had already moved on.

Khumalo Admits the Club Could Not See His Potential

Reflecting on the situation, Khumalo conceded that Chiefs did not identify Witbooi’s potential during his first spell around the club.

The coach also stressed that he was not directly involved in the original decision-making process.

His comments nevertheless highlight how difficult it can be for clubs to identify elite talent when young players are still developing physically and technically.

Amajita Success Has Raised Witbooi’s Profile

Witbooi’s performances for South Africa’s U20 side have significantly increased his profile.

His goal in the COSAFA Cup final against Mozambique added to the attention surrounding the Cape Town City teenager and further underlined his importance to Amajita’s campaign.

The youngster’s progress has also attracted interest from several clubs, with Orlando Pirates among the South African teams reportedly linked with him.

Bayern Munich Interest Adds to the Speculation

Witbooi has also been linked with opportunities outside South Africa.

Reports indicated that the teenager spent time training with Bayern Munich’s youth setup during pre-season, further increasing speculation about his future.

The reported European interest means competition for his signature could become increasingly difficult for South African clubs.

Chiefs May Have Missed Their Chance

For Kaizer Chiefs, Witbooi’s rapid development represents a notable missed opportunity.

The player had previously passed through the club’s system at a young age, giving Chiefs an early chance to monitor his progress.

Instead, he continued his development elsewhere and has now reached a point where several clubs are reportedly competing for his services.

Witbooi’s Next Move Remains Uncertain

With the teenager attracting interest domestically and abroad, his next career decision could prove significant.

A move to a leading South African club would allow him to continue his development closer to home, while reported European interest could offer another route into the international game.

For Chiefs, however, the focus is now on what might have been after Khumalo admitted that the club once had an opportunity to keep a closer eye on one of South Africa’s emerging young talents.
