Jurgen Klopp calls Liverpool’s penalty against Arsenal ‘soft’

The ‘soft’ penalty judgment that cost Liverpool a costly 3-2 loss to Arsenal on Sunday infuriated Jurgen Klopp.

Up until Thiago Alcantara was penalized for his tackle on Gabriel Jesus in the 76th minute at the Emirates Stadium, Klopp’s team was hanging on for a draw.

Jesus was very lightly touched by Thiago as he tumbled to the ground in the Liverpool area, but the penalty was still given after a VAR review.

As a result of Bukayo Saka’s successful penalty kick, Liverpool now trails Premier League leader Arsenal by 14 points.

After the final whistle, Klopp contacted referee Michael Oliver on the field and made it plain he didn’t think the event deserved a penalty.

“We should have resolved the penalty matter, of sure. I just seen it, and as you can probably guess, I don’t believe it’s a particularly harsh penalty “told BBC Sport, Klopp.

“I believe it to be a circumstance where the referee may take another look at it in real time,” the player said.

Because Liverpool has now won only two of their first eight league games, which is their worst start in ten years, Klopp’s annoyance has grown.

Their most recent careless loss was a long cry from the explosive displays that almost led them to a quadruple last season.

However, Klopp believed Liverpool had earned something after dominating a significant portion of the first half.

Prior to Saka’s winning goal, Darwin Nunez and Roberto Firmino both scored an equalizer, and Klopp stated: “It was a terrific away game against a strong team overall. Despite the many issues we caused them, we are still in this position.

“I saw a group that had the correct mindset and put up a decent fight. Although a few things went against us, we are not deaf and see that there were times when we might have performed better.

“I believe the game is a tie, but as of right now, we have nothing,”
