In the ongoing debate between two of South Africa’s most talented midfielders, former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye has stirred the pot with his bold opinion.
Khanye believes that Orlando Pirates playmaker Patrick Tito Maswanganyi is a superior talent to Mamelodi Sundowns’ Themba Zwane, also known as “Mshishi.”
The Two Midfielders and Their Growing Rivalry
Since joining the Buccaneers in 2023, Tito Maswanganyi has often been compared to Zwane, a player who has become a staple in the South African football scene over the past decade.
Despite their nine-year age gap, both players have attracted the attention of fans, leading to constant comparisons.
While Khanye holds a deep respect for both players, he makes it clear that he favors the young talent from Orlando Pirates.
Khanye’s Thoughts on Tito’s Abilities
In a discussion with Soccer Laduma, Khanye shared his thoughts on Tito’s skills, particularly in the number 10 role.
He admitted that although Zwane’s long-standing presence in the PSL has earned him great respect, Tito’s playing style, especially his technical ability and confidence, sets him apart.
“Tito is a star player in the country, and for me, in that number 10 role, I can only compare him to Mshishi, but honestly, Tito is better.
He may not have the speed, but his technique is exceptional.
His ability to find space behind defenses and his arrogance on the pitch make him stand out,” Khanye explained.
The Rise of Tito Maswanganyi
Khanye also highlighted Tito’s impressive rise through the ranks.
Unlike Zwane, who initially struggled and was loaned out before making his mark at Sundowns, Tito’s journey has been different.
From an early age, Tito spent time developing his skills in Portugal before returning to South Africa to play for SuperSport United and eventually joining Orlando Pirates.
Khanye pointed out that Tito’s development under Farouk Khan at the Stars of Africa Football Academy has played a key role in his growth as a player, and he believes the results are now evident on the pitch.
Tito vs. Zwane: Who is the Best Number 10?
Both players are currently part of the Bafana Bafana squad, but Khanye’s strong opinion is that Tito has emerged as the best number 10 in the PSL at the moment.
“Don’t get me wrong, I respect Mshishi for all he’s done, but when it comes to the best playmaker right now, Tito has no match,” Khanye emphasized.
He even pointed to Tito’s incredible mental strength, citing a memorable moment in a Soweto Derby.
“Show me any player who can score a penalty in the last minute of a Soweto derby like that.
There’s no one else who can do that,” Khanye said, referring to Tito’s decisive role in one of the most iconic fixtures in South African football.
Khanye’s Verdict on Tito vs. Zwane
For Khanye, Tito Maswanganyi has taken the crown from Themba Zwane as the country’s top playmaker, and he’s not afraid to say it.
It’s clear that Tito’s talent, confidence, and ability to handle pressure have left a lasting impression on the former Kaizer Chiefs winger.
