Joey Barton Appears in Warrington Magistrates’ Court to Deny Malicious Social Media Posts Targeting Football Pundit Eni Aluko and Faces Conditions Barring Any Further Online Mentions

Joey Barton is currently in the spotlight for his recent court appearance, where he addressed allegations stemming from social media posts.

The former Premier League footballer, aged 41, appeared at Warrington Magistrates’ Court this morning to respond to charges of malicious communications from early January.

In January, Barton reportedly compared football pundits Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward to infamous serial killers Fred and Rose West. This comparison followed their coverage of Crystal Palace’s FA Cup match against Everton.

During his court appearance, Barton confirmed his identity and denied the charges against him.

He has been released on bail with a condition that he must not mention Aluko on social media. Barton is scheduled to appear before Liverpool Crown Court on August 27 for further proceedings.

Details of the Posts

Earlier this month, Barton disclosed that he was facing charges related to posts made on X (formerly known as Twitter).

In one post, Barton criticized Aluko and Ward’s commentary and compared them to the notorious Wests, stating, “How is she even talking about men’s football? She can’t even kick a ball properly.

Your coverage of the game EFC last night, took it to a new low. Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward, the Fred and Rose West of football commentary.” Additionally, Barton included a photoshopped image placing the pundits’ heads on the bodies of the Wests.

Further Allegations

Prosecutor Joshua Sanderson-Kirk informed the court that Barton had also made derogatory comments about the Black Lives Matter movement, labeling Aluko as a “token hire” who had benefited from “affirmative action.”

Another tweet compared Aluko to historical figures Joseph Stalin and Pol Pot, and included offensive language.

Bail Conditions and Next Steps

District Judge Tan Ikram has sent the case to Liverpool Crown Court for a more detailed review. Barton has been granted conditional bail, which includes a restriction on mentioning Aluko on social media in any form.

This measure aims to prevent further offenses and ensure the case is handled appropriately.
