After discovering an official with 5 400 rounds of rifle ammunition in his possession, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) detained two of its own.

Following the arrest of two JMPD personnel who were reportedly in cahoots with a member of the public, police have opened a case of theft and unlawful trading.

After receiving a tip, the suspects were apprehended on Friday.

After receiving a tip from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), who had been conducting ammunition operations after arresting a member of the public at a shooting range in Randfontein, the department’s internal affairs team led the arrest.

Following his arrest, the individual revealed the identity of a JMPD official with whom he was collaborating.

The statement continued, “The JMPD official also pointed out the second official who is the accused ammo source.”

The second official was apprehended at The Glen Mall in Oakdene, according to the JMPD statement. He was discovered with 5400 rounds of JMPD ammo.

Moffatview police station is said to have detained all three suspects.

The JMPD has initiated a docket as well as an internal investigation because the department’s resources were used in the commission of a crime.

On April 11, the accused are scheduled to appear in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court.
