Due to her real-life eating condition, “iCarly” actress Jennette McCurdy found it difficult to portray the food-obsessed Sam Puckett on the popular sitcom.

“It was so confusing at the time to be struggling with anorexia, binge-eating disorder, or bulimia while portraying a character who throws fried chicken legs and beats people with ham sandwiches,” McCurdy said during an appearance on the latest episode of “Red Table Talk,” which aired on Facebook Watch on Wednesday.

“My life seemed to be mocking me in many ways, and it was quite painful,” she added.

During the six-season run of “iCarly” on Nickelodeon from 2007 to 2012, McCurdy’s character was frequently observed eating fried chicken and Fat Cakes. This continued in the spin-off series “Sam & Cat,” in which Ariana Grande portrayed Cat Valentine.

McCurdy stated in her New York Times best-selling memoir “I’m Glad My Mom Died” that her domineering mother caused her to become anorexic at the age of 11.

McCurdy stated that anorexia “robbed me of any fun and sense of independence I had.”

The actress wrote that she also suffered from binge eating disorder and bulimia. She began attending an eating disorder specialist in her twenties, who assisted her in “gaining some control over my connection with food.”

McCurdy stated that “iCarly” co-star Miranda Cosgrove was one of the few people she confided in regarding her “food difficulties,” and that Cosgrove was “very supportive” of her recovery.
