Actress Jeanne Tripplehorn has been seen in Los Angeles following the publication of Michael Douglas’ new memoir, in which the actor revealed that he had a romantic relationship with his former Basic Instinct co-star.
Tripplehorn was photographed on Tuesday while out for coffee with her husband, actor Leland Orser. The appearance came on the same day Douglas’ book, One Helluva Ride, was published.
Tripplehorn and Douglas Worked Together on Basic Instinct
Tripplehorn played Dr Beth Garner in Paul Verhoeven’s 1992 thriller Basic Instinct, while Douglas starred as detective Nick Curran.
The film follows Curran’s investigation into a murder involving novelist and suspect Catherine Tramell, played by Sharon Stone. Tripplehorn’s character was a police psychologist who also became romantically involved with Douglas’ character.
At the time the film was released, Tripplehorn was 28 and unmarried, while Douglas was 47 and married to Diandra Luker.
Douglas Reveals Their Relationship Decades Later
Douglas wrote in his memoir that he and Tripplehorn began a relationship during the production of Basic Instinct.
According to the actor, he had developed strong feelings for Tripplehorn and considered whether to leave his marriage to Luker for the relationship.
Douglas said he ultimately decided that moving directly from a lengthy marriage into another relationship would have been the wrong decision.
He also wrote that Tripplehorn had initially been reluctant to become involved with a married man, but that he told her he and Luker had formally separated.
Relationship Remained Private During Filming
Douglas said he and Tripplehorn kept their relationship private while working on the film.
He described their relationship as continuing throughout production before the pair eventually went their separate ways.
Douglas also wrote about the difficulties of filming intimate scenes together while maintaining their private relationship away from the cameras.
Douglas Recalls Filming Intimate Scenes
In his memoir, Douglas discussed the filming of an intimate scene between his character and Tripplehorn’s.
He said the production involved detailed rehearsals and discussions about what would happen during the scene. He also recalled checking with Tripplehorn between takes during a physically intense sequence.
Douglas wrote that the production took place before intimacy coordinators became standard on film sets.
He said the actors nevertheless agreed on the movements involved during rehearsals and communicated about the scene before filming.
Tripplehorn Later Found Love With Leland Orser
Tripplehorn’s relationship with Douglas ended during the years following the production of Basic Instinct.
She later met Leland Orser while working on the 1998 comedy Very Bad Things. Their relationship began several years after her romance with Douglas had ended.
The couple married in 2000 in Tripplehorn’s hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
They later welcomed a son, August.
Douglas Asked Tripplehorn Before Publishing the Story
Douglas said he contacted Tripplehorn before including details of their relationship in his memoir.
According to the actor, he asked for her permission to write about their romantic history and said she agreed.
Douglas described Tripplehorn positively in the book, referring to her as an accomplished actress and a person he was fortunate to have known.
Douglas Also Reveals Kathleen Turner Affair
Tripplehorn’s story is not the only previously undisclosed relationship discussed in Douglas’ memoir.
The actor also wrote about an affair with Kathleen Turner during the production of Romancing the Stone, which was released in 1984.
Douglas and Turner were both involved with other partners at the time. Douglas was married to Luker, while Turner was dating her future husband, real estate executive Jay Weiss.
Turner Responds to Memoir Revelation
Rumors about Douglas and Turner’s relationship had circulated for years, but the two actors had publicly denied that their attraction developed into an affair.
Douglas now says in his memoir that they did have a relationship while filming in Mexico.
Turner has responded to the revelation without apparent hostility, saying the events occurred roughly four decades ago and expressing affection for Douglas.
The pair subsequently continued their professional relationship, appearing together in The Jewel of the Nile and later reuniting for The War of the Roses.
Douglas and Tripplehorn Have Moved On
Douglas and Tripplehorn ultimately pursued separate lives after their relationship ended.
Douglas later married Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000, and they have two children together.
Tripplehorn built a family with Orser, whom she has been married to for more than two decades.
Her Los Angeles appearance alongside Orser came as renewed public attention focused on her past relationship with Douglas following the publication of his memoir.
