According to Jay Blades of The Repair Shop, he left the mother of his first kid because he was too young to manage fatherhood at the age of 20.
He claims that since his father had left him when he was a baby, he had no notion how to be a parent. He admits to being unprepared on today’s Desert Island Discs on Radio 4.
Blades, 52, continues, “I suppose I remained with her for about a year and that was it.” Blades says of the kid Levi’s mother,
You need to be taught how to accomplish something if you can’t see it.
The BBC broadcaster and his half-brother Justin were raised by his adolescent mother Barbara, who was also a single parent. Before relocating to Hackney and living with relatives, they temporarily resided in a homeless shelter. London’s East.
Blades refers to his biological father Trevor as “the guy who contributed towards my birth” rather than “father” during their conversation on Desert Island Discs.
According to him, Trevor assured his mother that he would find them a place to live and that everything would turn out OK.
But rather, “he took off with the cash, and that was it.” She had to fend for herself.
Blades originally claimed that he did not meet Trevor until he was 21 years old and that he subsequently learned that he had 27 half-siblings.
On the TV programme, he is known for restoring priceless family heirlooms, but he claims he has no plans to mend fences with Trevor.
I still feel the same way about him, he says to presenter Lauren Laverne. When The Repair Shop premiered on the BBC, he contacted me and I had no idea who he was.
I told him that we don’t take things like that when he first started talking to me about wanting anything repaired. You’re going to need to follow the correct procedures.
He said, “You don’t know who this is,” and then went on to claim that since I am half of him, he is the reason I am acting in the way that I am. I merely stated, “I disagree,” to him. I can only thank you for showing me how not to be a parent, however, and for that I do agree. After that, we broke apart.
Blades, whose success with The Repair Shop has made him a sex icon, is married with a teenage daughter named Zola and another son, Dior, age 27, from a prior relationship.
He asserts that his kids will decide if he is a good dad now or not.
He claims, “I believe my kids are grounded.” I am sometimes pretty strict. I tend to repeat the same thing over and over again.
But I tell many of the young people I mentor the same thing. that they should have a positive outlook on life, keep going ahead, and keep doing their best. Everything will work out OK.
Today at 11.15am, Desert Island Discs will be on Radio 4. At 9 a.m. on Friday, it is replayed.
