Jane McDonald has always been closely tied to her Yorkshire roots, from singing in local pubs to creating a television show celebrating the county.
But now, the singer is contemplating a big change, one that could take her far from the place she holds dear.
Four years after the death of her partner Eddie Rothe from lung cancer, Jane has decided to put her £1 million bungalow up for sale.
Having lived in the bungalow for 18 years, Jane, who is now 62, is ready for a fresh chapter.
The house has undergone a massive renovation, transforming it into a modern home with an open-plan kitchen, panoramic views of the garden, and even a walk-in wardrobe.
It’s a place she’s shared with her best friend, Sue Ravey, since 2022.
But despite its charm, Jane has recently admitted that the house has become too large for her, and she’s thinking about downsizing.
A Nod to the Past, but a Future Focused on Change
In an interview last year, Jane hinted at the possibility of moving. She shared her thoughts with The Times, saying, “I converted the bungalow into a house during lockdown.
I had everything done, and it’s gorgeous, but now it’s far too big.
All I do is clean. I’ll probably downsize. The sea is calling.” Her words suggest that, after a long period of reflection, she’s ready to let go of the home that holds so many memories, including the years spent with Eddie.
The bungalow was sold for £485,000 in 2007, and its price has now risen to £1 million.
The property boasts five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a conservatory, and even a gym, making it a luxurious space.
But despite its beauty, Jane seems to be looking forward to a new chapter in her life.
Yorkshire Will Always Be Home
Though Jane may be considering a move, Yorkshire will always be a significant part of her identity.
In 2022, she hosted My Love Letter to Yorkshire, where she celebrated everything about the place that shaped her.
In interviews, Jane has often expressed her deep affection for her home city of Wakefield, calling it “Wakey” and proudly sharing its story with the world.
“It’s where I’m from. I love it, I miss it when I’m not there, and I’m fiercely proud of it,” she once said.
Even when traveling, she always made sure to mention Wakefield and Yorkshire.
Her commitment to her roots extends beyond her words; Jane is also very active in her community.
Just last Wednesday, she opened a new £6 million MRI suite at Wakefield’s Pinderfields Hospital.
In her speech, Jane emphasized how important the hospital was to the local area.
“As a proud Wakefield lass, I’m deeply passionate about supporting our local hospital trust because I know just how much it means,” she shared.
The Push to Stay in Yorkshire Despite London Offers
This isn’t the first time Jane has had to consider leaving her beloved Yorkshire.
In the past, her ex-husband Henrik Brixen, whom she divorced in 2003, encouraged her to move to London.
But Jane was firm in her decision to stay. She has always been clear that Yorkshire is where her heart is, and it’s evident that, while she’s open to change now, the love for her home county will never fade.
It’s clear that, even if Jane McDonald decides to move away from her current home, Yorkshire will remain a core part of who she is.
Whether she chooses to move closer to the sea or find something smaller, her deep connection to the region and its people will always shape her next steps.
