Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk are meeting in New Delhi on October 22 to assess progress in the strategic partnership established during Modi’s visit to Warsaw in August 2024.
The talks focus on turning diplomatic commitments into practical cooperation, with defence manufacturing, space technology and clean energy among the main areas of discussion.
Defence Cooperation Moves Towards Joint Production
Joint defence production is a key priority for both countries, with discussions centred on developing shared industrial capabilities and strengthening supply chains.
India and Poland have a history of defence cooperation, including the WZT-3M armoured recovery vehicle project involving Poland’s Bumar and India’s BEML, which began in 1999.
The current agenda places greater emphasis on local manufacturing and the development of specialised defence technologies in India. Polish Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski has indicated that the aim is to move beyond purchasing equipment towards establishing production capabilities.
Polish Satellite Technology Opens New Opportunities
Space technology is another area attracting attention, particularly through the involvement of Polish satellite company ICEYE, which specialises in synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
The technology can capture images in darkness and through cloud cover, making it useful for surveillance and security applications.
ICEYE has signed memorandums of understanding with Indian companies Dhruva Aerospace and AgniKul Cosmos. The agreements point towards potential cooperation combining Polish radar technology with India’s satellite and launch capabilities.
Clean Energy Investment Forms Part of Economic Agenda
The discussions also cover cooperation in the energy transition, with Poland seeking investment opportunities in India’s clean-energy sector.
The focus includes technologies that can support cleaner industrial processes, adding an economic and environmental dimension to the bilateral partnership.
India-Poland Business Forums are scheduled to take place in New Delhi on October 22 and in Bengaluru on October 23. The events are intended to connect the two countries’ policy objectives with private-sector investment and commercial projects.
Wider Geopolitical Issues Also on the Agenda
The meeting provides an opportunity for Modi and Tusk to discuss broader international matters, including India’s relationship with the European Union and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
These issues form part of the wider diplomatic discussions as the two countries seek to strengthen industrial and technological cooperation through their strategic partnership.
