Imo State Governor Reverses Stance on Civil Servant Prosecutions for Double Salaries

In a significant shift in his approach, Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has decided not to proceed with the punitive measures he previously threatened against civil servants found to have received double salaries.

This change of plan comes after revelations from the government’s salary automation exposed 935 individuals fraudulently receiving payments for the past decade.

Change of Heart

Governor Uzodinma announced his change of heart while responding to appeals made by the parish priest of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Nkwo Emeke, Emekukwu of Owerri North Local Government Area.

The occasion was the 65th birthday celebration of Sir Jude Ejiogu.

Clarifying the Situation

During this event, the governor clarified that civil servants who had been complaining about not receiving their salaries had not fully disclosed the situation.

He disclosed that those who had not been paid their salaries and arrears were actually part of the automated salary scheme but had been caught receiving double salaries for the past ten years.

Governor’s Statement

Governor Uzodinma stated, “The automation of salary payment to civil servants uncovered a lot of discrepancies on the part of the workers, especially those who had hitherto earned double salary from the Government.”

Resolution Instead of Prosecution

In light of these findings, Governor Uzodinma has decided to rescind the government’s initial decision to prosecute the offenders.

Instead, the state government will initiate a process to resolve the matter, enabling those in the category of double salary recipients to receive their rightful salaries without legal consequences.

This change in approach reflects the governor’s commitment to addressing the issue in a more conciliatory manner.
