Emma Raducanu, the 22-year-old British tennis star, is navigating through a challenging phase in her career but managed to make a strong comeback at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Coming into the tournament on the back of a four-match losing streak, Raducanu was determined to turn things around. A Rough Start and an Emotional Moment Raducanu’s tournament began with an impressive victory over Maria Sakkari, where she won 6-4, 6-2. However, her second-round match against Karolina Muchova on Tuesday night did not start as hoped. Raducanu quickly found herself down 2-0 in the first set. During a brief pause, cameras caught Raducanu wiping away tears, a moment that visibly shook the young player. Sitting on the bench, she spoke with the umpire before standing up to continue the match. Overcoming the Setback It was unclear why Raducanu was so emotional, but she composed herself and fought hard to stay in the match. Despite her efforts to recover, she lost the first set in a tie-break, 7-6. This setback followed a series of disappointing early exits in her recent tournaments, including first-round defeats in Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Singapore, as well as a tough loss to Iga Swiatek in the third round of the Australian Open. Struggles and Support Raducanu has also been without a full-time coach since Nick Cavaday stepped down due to health reasons. While she searches for a new coach, she has the support of her former coach and close friend, Jane O’Donoghue. In her post-match comments after the win against Sakkari, Raducanu reflected on her performance: “I just tried to stay really focused on the point in front of me. There were some momentum shifts throughout the match, and when I got broken twice early in the sets, I just regrouped really well and managed to break back [immediately] both times. I was really pleased with how I fought and competed against Maria, she’s a top player, been as high as three in the world. I’m just really proud of my performance.” What’s Next for Raducanu Raducanu is currently ranked No. 60 in the world, and with more wins at the WTA 1000 level in Dubai, she could see her ranking climb higher. The tournament is being held at the Aviation Club Tennis Centre in the United Arab Emirates, and Raducanu, having received a wildcard entry, will be looking to build on her recent performance and get back on track after a tough start to 2025.
