This support aims to alleviate the financial burden of parenting; however, it’s crucial to understand that the grant is intended to supplement income and not serve as the sole source of financial support.

To ensure the appropriate use of funds and prevent misuse, specific requirements must be met when applying for a SASSA child grant.

SASSA Child Grant Application: Eligibility and Process Explained

To qualify for a SASSA child grant, the applicant must meet certain criteria defined by the Social Security Agency.

In this context, a child is defined as an individual below 18 years of age. The primary caregiver, which includes parents, relatives, or grandparents, can apply for the grant.

However, additional eligibility conditions must be met to proceed with the application.

Eligibility Requirements for a SASSA Child Grant

To be eligible for a SASSA child grant, the following criteria must be satisfied:

1. The caregiver must have permanent residency in South Africa or be a South African citizen.
2. If unmarried, the caregiver’s monthly income should not exceed R4,400 or an annual income of R52,800.
3. If married, the combined income of the caregiver and their spouse should not exceed R8,800 per month or R105,600 per year.

Proof of Primary Caregiver

To prevent the exploitation of the SASSA child grant system by individuals without actual caregiving responsibilities, applicants who are not biological parents or legal guardians must provide proof that they are the primary caregiver. Accepted forms of proof include:

• An affidavit from the child’s parent or the police.
• A letter from the child’s school principal.
• An official report from a duly recognized social worker.
• The child must be 18 years of age or younger.
• The child must reside with the primary caregiver.
• The caregiver should not receive any additional compensation for raising the child.
• The child cannot be under the care of any government institution.
• It’s important to note that a caregiver cannot receive grants for more than six children.

How to Apply for a SASSA Child Grant

While there is no online application process for a SASSA child grant, eligible applicants can visit the service counter of any regional SASSA office to initiate the application.

The applicant should complete the necessary application forms, and assistance will be provided by a SASSA official during the process. Required documents for the application may include:

• Caregiver’s bar-coded South African identification card (ID).
• Child’s birth certificate with an identification (ID) number.
• Proof of income, such as payslips, pension slips, or the past three months’ bank statements.
• Bluebook/Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) card from the caregiver’s last job.
• Proof of primary caregiver status for the child or children, as previously described.

How Will You Get Paid?

SASSA offers two payment methods for children’s grants: cash and electronic funds transfer (EFT). Cash payments can be collected from designated pay points on specified days, while EFT payments are directly transferred to the recipient’s bank account.

The current monthly payment amount for a SASSA child grant is R760 per child.

Important Note: Grant recipients can change their preferred payment method at a SASSA regional office.

Payments typically commence three months after the date of application. In cases where eligibility criteria are not met, the grant application may be declined, and applicants have the option to appeal the decision.
