Gunmen Open Fire on Crowds at Bondi Beach During Hanukkah Celebration Killing Eleven and Injuring Dozens

What started as a sunny summer day at Bondi Beach quickly descended into tragedy.

Crowds of locals, tourists, and families were enjoying the afternoon when two gunmen appeared on a pedestrian footbridge and opened fire, targeting people celebrating Hanukkah.

In mere minutes, 11 lives were lost and at least 29 more were injured, with the numbers feared to rise.

One of the shooters was killed, and the other remains hospitalised.

Prime Minister Condemns Attack and Calls for Unity

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed the nation following a National Security Committee meeting, vowing to confront the violence head-on.

“There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in our nation,” he said.

Albanese stressed that, even amidst the horror, Australians would stand together, showing solidarity with the Jewish community and supporting law enforcement as the investigation unfolds.

The Attack Unfolds

The gunmen arrived on Campbell Parade near Bondi Beach, draping a black ISIS-style flag over their car.

Video footage captured them moving to the pedestrian footbridge and opening fire toward Archer Park, where families had gathered for the Chanukah by the Sea festival.

Witnesses described hearing loud pops and seeing people injured, sparking panic as crowds scrambled to escape.

Civilians Step Up as Heroes

Around 7:20pm, one gunman moved along a sidewalk near the festival grounds.

A brave member of the public, with the help of a second bystander, tackled and disarmed the attacker, preventing further casualties.

Police then moved in, shooting one suspect dead while hospitalising the other.

By 7:43pm, NSW Police confirmed both perpetrators had been apprehended.

Timeline of the Immediate Response

  • 6:47pm: Police and ambulances rush to Bondi Beach.

  • 7:05pm: NSW Police warn people to shelter and avoid the area.

  • 7:30pm: Footage shows both suspects handcuffed on the footbridge.

  • 8:35pm: Ambulance confirms 16 hospitalisations.

  • 8:45pm: Police report 10 dead, later revised to 12.

  • 9:00pm: Exclusion zones established; IEDs discovered in shooters’ car.

A massive police presence combed the area, searching for additional devices or potential accomplices.

Police Raids and Suspect Identification

Raids were conducted in Sydney, including the home of one gunman in Bonnyrigg, later identified as Naveed Akram.

Authorities also arrested two others in connection with the attack.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that 29 people were hospitalised in varying conditions and praised officers for their response.

Questions About Police Preparedness

Some witnesses, including Grace Matthews, questioned the police response, noting delays despite a nearby station.

“It required a member of the public to neutralise one of the threats,” Matthews said, highlighting the dangers civilians faced during the attack.

Commissioner Lanyon defended the response, calling it “prompt and professional” and noting lessons learned from previous incidents.

ASIO Confirms Known Watchlist Connection

Australia’s domestic intelligence agency, ASIO, revealed one shooter was known to authorities, though not considered an immediate threat.

Director-General Mike Burgess said a thorough review would follow to understand how someone under surveillance could execute such an attack.

Community Bravery and National Solidarity

NSW Premier Chris Minns emphasised the courage of both police and ordinary citizens.

“There are still wonderful, brave Australians prepared to risk their lives to help a complete stranger,” he said, praising the outpouring of support for Australia’s Jewish community.

A Dark Day for Bondi and Australia

Sunday’s events at Bondi Beach have left the nation reeling.

As investigations continue into how the gunmen obtained high-powered weapons and whether there were additional accomplices, Australians are left mourning lives lost and grappling with the reality of a terror attack in one of the country’s most iconic locations.

The focus now turns to securing justice, examining intelligence failures, and honouring the bravery of those who acted heroically amid chaos.
