In a disturbing incident, a settlement near the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) known as Gandu, became the scene of a violent attack late Monday night.

The assault has resulted in at least one reported fatality, and an unspecified number of individuals have been abducted to an unknown destination.

Proximity to FULafia Attracts University Community

Gandu is home to both staff and students of FULafia due to its close proximity to the university’s permanent site. Consequently, the area boasts a significant presence of university personnel and students.

Victims’ Identities Remain Unknown

At this time, the identities of the victims of the attack remain undisclosed. The lack of information about the individuals involved adds to the urgency of the situation.

Security Forces Mobilized to Safeguard Residents

Illegal Firearm Possession: Two Arrested on Keffi-Nasarawa Road

In a separate but related development, two individuals, Abdulrahman Sani and Ibrahim Usman, both in their twenties, have been apprehended for illegal firearm possession on the Keffi-Nasarawa Road.

The Nasarawa State Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Peter Onche-Odaudu, confirmed the arrests during a press conference held in Lafia, the state capital.

The Arrest and the Firearm Seizure

On October 28, 2023, officers from the Keffi Area Command of the NDLEA conducted routine patrols on the Keffi-Nasarawa Road.

During one of these patrols, a standard stop-and-search operation on a commercial vehicle led to the apprehension of Abdulrahman Sani and Ibrahim Usman. The suspects were in possession of a locally made pistol and one cartridge, concealed within a black polythene bag.

The Suspects’ Account

According to Onche-Odaudu, the two suspects claimed that they had received the illegal firearm from an individual named Sani in Tashan Yaro, Katsina State. They were instructed to deliver it to a certain Babangida in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The suspects were promised a reward of N200,000 upon successful delivery, to be divided between themselves.

Acknowledgment of Illegality

The NDLEA commander emphasized that the suspects acknowledged the illegal nature of the firearm they possessed.

Legal Consequences and Further Investigation

In light of the arrests, the suspects are set to be transferred to the police for further investigation and appropriate legal action. The incident underscores the seriousness with which authorities are tackling illegal firearm possession.

Collaboration with Security Agencies

It is worth noting that the NDLEA has been effective in collaborating with other security agencies in recent times. At least four suspects have been transferred from the NDLEA to the Nigerian Police Force as part of this collaborative effort.
