Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale believes his sons should be judged on their abilities rather than their famous surname, insisting they are earning opportunities through hard work and musical talent rather than family connections.
The rock musician said the ongoing debate around so-called “nepo babies” overlooks one important factor: genuine quality.
According to Rossdale, audiences ultimately decide who succeeds, regardless of their family background.
Music Talent Is the Ultimate Test
During an appearance on the And The Writer Is podcast, Rossdale reflected on how children of celebrities are often criticised before they’ve had the chance to prove themselves.
He argued that exceptional talent has always been the deciding factor in the music industry, pointing to late singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley as an example of an artist whose family ties became secondary because of the strength of his work.
Rossdale said that while accusations of nepotism are easy to make, they quickly lose weight if an artist consistently delivers high-quality music.
One Son Is Already Chasing a Music Career
The 60-year-old revealed that one of his sons has decided to skip college in order to focus entirely on recording music.
Rather than pushing his own ideas, Rossdale admitted his son prefers to find his own path and rarely seeks advice from his famous father.
The singer said he has encouraged him to continue practising, improve his guitar skills and keep working on his voice, but ultimately respects his decision to develop independently.
Following Famous Parents Into the Spotlight
Rossdale shares sons Kingston, 20, Zuma, 17, and Apollo, 12, with his former wife, No Doubt star Gwen Stefani.
Both Kingston and Zuma have already begun exploring careers in music.
Kingston has reportedly been developing his own material over the past few years, while Zuma attracted attention after making his country music debut at Blake Shelton’s Oklahoma venue when he was only 15.
Rossdale believes those early performances demonstrate that his children are serious about building careers based on their own abilities.

Rossdale and Stefani were married from 2002 until their divorce in 2016.
Following the split, Stefani found love with country music star Blake Shelton, whom she married in 2021.
Shelton has spoken openly about embracing his role as stepfather to Stefani’s three sons, saying he considers it one of the most important responsibilities in his life.
He has previously explained that being present for the boys matters more to him than career success, adding that he wants to avoid looking back with regrets over missed family moments.

Away from his relationship with Stefani, Rossdale has reportedly been dating singer Xhoana X since 2024.
He is also father to British model Daisy Lowe, whose paternity became public in 2004 after she underwent DNA testing as a teenager.
Daisy, whose mother is fashion designer and singer Pearl Lowe, initially had little relationship with Rossdale, but the pair gradually developed a close bond in the years that followed.
